Hey, as long as everyone's wanting to know about adamantine armor, I've got one that I'll bet you've never thought about... (And believe it or not, I've got a legit game reason to be asking...)

What about adamantine Studded Leather armor...?

As light armor, it would grant DR 1/- , right?

But how much would it cost? Weight is listed as 20# but it logically goes to reason that if Leather itself weighs 15#, then only 5# of "studs" need be of that expensive metal...

Now, a chain shirt of adamantine @ 25# is +5000gp. But a Weapon of Adamantine is +3000gp. Weapons are weighing in at a lot closer to 5#...

So would it, could it, stand to reason that we could get away with adamantine studded leather armor for 3000gp (& change)?

And don't tell me that Studded Leather doesn't qualify for adamantine construction, or I'll take away your barbarian's adamantine greataxe with that long oaken haft!

I'm actually serious, for a race that I'd have to kill you about if I were to tell you about...

Thoughts?

Well, it says adamantine light armor costs +5000 gp, so I'd say your studded leather costs 5025 gp.

I agree you could do it, BTW, seeing as how druids can't wear studded leather.

I don't think studded leather has enough metal content for that to work. Just my opinion though.

And don't tell me that Studded Leather doesn't qualify for adamantine construction, or I'll take away your barbarian's adamantine greataxe with that long oaken haft! Studded Leather doesn't qualify for adamantine construction. The functional part of that axe (the head) is entirely made of adamantine. The functional part of the armour isn't.

If you want adamantine light armor, go for a chain shirt.

You all always miss the point. If we were power-playing, for 5000gp, we'd be doing a heck of a lot more than any normal armor(s).

It is studded leather because it's a racial-flavor thing; It's the standard or signature dress of these people. Same as elven chain or dwarven plate.

Thanks for all input so far, guys.

Umm...if the 'studs' aren't the functional part of the armor, why does Studded-Leather armor have a higher armor bonus than Leather? Why would it have 'Studded' in the name?

I think it would come down to DM discretion really. I personally think it's do-able.

I didn't say the studs are not the functional part. They're not the entire functional part.

Either way, I wouldn't do this simply because to be consistent, you'd have to differentiate for every set of armour. And I don't just mean type: armour for tall humans would be more costly than the same armour fitted for a small human. That's just too much micromanagement for me. Next thing you know all your PCs will be the minimum height for their race, to save a buck on equipment. ;)

That's just not right. Adamantine armor is not priced by weight at all. All the differentiation you need is right there in the rule:

Adamantine: This ultrahard metal adds to the quality of a weapon or suit of armor. Weapons fashioned from adamantine have a natural ability to bypass hardness when sundering weapons or attacking objects, ignoring hardness less than 20. Armor made from adamantine grants its wearer damage reduction of 1/– if it’s light armor, 2/– if it’s medium armor, and 3/– if it’s heavy armor. Adamantine is so costly that weapons and armor made from it are always of masterwork quality; the masterwork cost is included in the prices given below. Thus, adamantine weapons and ammunition have a +1 enhancement bonus on attack rolls, and the armor check penalty of adamantine armor is lessened by 1 compared to ordinary armor of its type. Items without metal parts cannot be made from adamantine. An arrow could be made of adamantine, but a quarterstaff could not.
Only weapons, armor, and shields normally made of metal can be fashioned from adamantine. Weapons, armor and shields normally made of steel that are made of adamantine have one-third more hit points than normal. Adamantine has 40 hit points per inch of thickness and hardness 20.

Type of Adamantine Item Item Cost Modifier
Ammunition +60 gp
Light armor +5,000 gp
Medium armor +10,000 gp
Heavy armor +15,000 gp
Weapon +3,000 gp

Studded leather armor is Light armor, so it costs +5000 gp. Doesn't matter how much it weighs, even whether it is for a Tiny or Collossal creature.

The only question is whether studded leather is eligible. Clearly it does have metal parts, which is good, but is it "made of metal"? I could see that going either way, but again, in the druid write up it is treated as metal armor.

If you are DM change the price to suit your needs. If you are a player bring your arguments to your DM and let him decide.

I am the DM. Or, one of two co-DMs. Doesn't mean I don't value input from the outside.

I decided within 30 minutes of my first post yesterday that my brainstorming about the price was skewed. 5000 it is; I'd already read the parts about masterworked being included and whatnot. But I appreciate all the posts about that, kept me from having to type what I'd already logically deduced, for others that were following the thread.

As for the posters thinking it shouldn't even qualify, that's skewed. The armor has to be looked at as "the whole". Otherwise, we'd all be running around stating, "The guy has a breastplate? I attack his AC 10 legs, between where the greaves and breastplate are." Studded Leather is more metal than you think, anyway; It's not little Elton John Rhinestone studs; The "studs" are actually often pretty largish plates (platelets?) about the upper chest and shoulders, varying in size and shape to allow movement. I'm trying to find some images, but failing miserably, and my scanner doesn't work.

Thanks again everybody! Problem resolved. :)
