In an adventure I am about to start my Dwarf ftr/clr will be carrying an Adamantine Maul and will be Sundering right & left. As I think this is a fairly kick butt weapon I want to name it; therein lies the problem no one can find a description of what Adamantine looks like. A friend of mine seems to recall it being blue-black, which is what I remember; but my DM seems to think its gold colored. Does anyone know what Adamantine looks like & if possable could u site your source. Many thanks. :D

Well first off theres no such thing as "Adamantine" I believe theres lots of threads that talk about this do a search. Adamantium is first credited in Marvel comics and is what is laced in Wolverines body, so a good bet is adamantine would be the colour of his claws. I too have heard of a dark blue black coloured metal, remember adamantine in D&D comes from meteorites...hope that helps.

I've usually seen it described as being jet-black.

From the AD&D "Drizzt's Guide to the Underdark":

the dwarves of Ammarindar were known for their everbright
adamantine armor. They fashioned suits of full plate
worked into horns, ridges, barbs, and crests of a shining blue
silver hue

However, I always thought of adamantine as more of a midnight blue colour. This could have been a holdover from my Daggerfall days, when Adamantium equipment was black, Dwarven equipment was gold, and Daedric stuff was blood-red.

EDIT: It is possible that Drizzt is referring to the colour of the crests rather than that of the armour itself, in which case adamantine could still very well be blue-black.

Personally, I'm a fan of the blue-black myself.

Actually, both Adamantine and Adamantium come from the same MUCH OLDER root word: Adamant. It just means "very hard substance" basically.

You can actually find the word adamant scattered throughout some historical poetry and such. Tolkien uses it as well in his works. This was all long before Marvel came up with "Adamantium."

Hm... the Epic Level Handbook has an entry and illustration for an Adamantine Golem. The picture shows a grey-blue golem, and the entry reads:

It generally looks like a Huge Iron Golem, but with the unique sheen of adamantine

So again, there's another potential argument for a silvery blue adamantine.

I'm still on the fence myself, blue or grey. It's possible that they represent two different alloys of adamanine.

And I agree with Vahenir. The concept/word adamantine has been around for a long time. It is derived from the greek word for diamond, "adamas" and has been used in ancient writing and classical literature to signify (a material of) unsurpassed hardness.

Nerfherder3 First of all in D&D there is such a thing as Adamantine. Secondly Adamantium is from Marvel Comics and it has been used in numerous charecters besides Wolverine; Sabretooth, Bullseye, Lady Deathstrike, among others. Thirdly they have nothing to do with each other. Lastly, if u are going to attmept to criticize someone, make a token attempt to get your facts in order before u do so :P

To the board world at large any other sources u can find would be much appreciated.

OK, now to post yet another dnd reference, Monster Manual II has an illustration of an Adamantine Clockwork Horror. The creature is jet-black in appearance.

So my $0.02 is that the colour of adamantine depends on the type of adamantine used. The typical alloys used to produce equipment is either jet black or a silvery blue.

These alloys have more or less identical physical qualities, and may reflect impurities in the adamantine ore mined from different sources, or may be related to the smelting techniques used in manufacture.

According to Volo's Guide to All Things Magical for 2E Forgotten Realms, Adamantine is a black, almost oily-looking metal. When natural light reflects from it, it reflects a distinct greenish hue. When magical light reflects from it, it's a vibrant purple-white reflection.

I really don't see why this is such a big thing. This is the sort of conversation most DMs would have put to rest a long time ago.

Players: But what colour is it..?
DM: Well.. what colour do you want it to be?
Players: (all shout out a different colour)
DM: M'kay... well I like the midnight blue idea.. so Adamantine is now midnight blue.

There, done.
This is not that big a deal. Make it whatever colour you want. There doesn't appear to be any official word on what colour it is, but then again there's no official word on the colour of metal in general in D&D.. maybe all metal is greenish yellow..... or pink.

From "Volo's Guide to All Things Magical"
- Adamant: This is the pure metal form of the hard, jet-black ferromagnetic ore known as adamantite, from which the famous alloy adamantine is made.
- Adamantine: This alloy, of five-eighths adamant to two-eighths silver and one-eighth electrum (itself a natural alloy of silver and gold), [...] is black, but has a clear green sheen in candlelight - a sheen that sharpens to purple-white under the light given off by most magical radiances and by will-o'-wisps.
DM Zoc

I've always imagined it to be green, probably because it's never shown up in any campaign I've been in even though greensteel is common; I've likely confused the two in my head.

Well, gold comes in multiple hues. "Black hills gold" items use three hues in a single item: yellow, white, and a coppery red. The reference to vollos is useful if you want an "official" ruling, but really, it can be anything. It can even be many things.

SOmething else to consider, special suits could have a coat of enamel paint baked on. Sure it would chip, but for a while, the armor could be any color you wish.

Nerfherder3 First of all in D&D there is such a thing as Adamantine.

I meant IRL theres no REAL life reference to it. Was not meant as a criticizm, the thread poster was just looking for ideas about a fictional substance I gave him a place to look period. Yes I've played D&D for 25 years I know what Adamantine(tium) is in the fictional sense, also in the histroical sense as the root word adamant or "like a diamond" Adamantine is actually an adjective NOT a noun.

ad·a·mant ( P ) Pronunciation Key (d-mnt, -mnt)
adj.
Impervious to pleas, appeals, or reason; stubbornly unyielding. See Synonyms at inflexible.

n.
A stone once believed to be impenetrable in its hardness.

I also recall it being labeled as jet black, back when it was adamantite in second edition (and some of the Drizzt books).

I love how much sense this guy makes and everyone is still arguing over something as pointless as what color this metal is. Does it really matter? Whatever happened to the ultimate authority that DMs used to have? If your DM said Adamanitine was black but this post eventaully decided it was blue, would you really argue it with him?

Basically, I see it as being equally darker than iron/steel than iron/steel is than silver.

You can make the color of adamantine any color you want, its up to your imaginiation. You can paint it if you have to or even make an alloy so that it has a different hue. If you want fuschia adamantine fullplate with streaks of exotic green, it is possible. Seriously, I tihnk in a world that can make +5 vorpal greatswords, color is not an issue.
LordOfHavoc

Admrial Yi Sun Shin: of course D&D being a make-belive world we can make Adamantine any color we want; my group just wants to know what the designers intended it to be. Of course if we dont like it, we change it,that simple. Thats why D&D is cooler than real life :D

If Adamantium is an alloy, it could be almost any color as alloying metals often produces totally different colorations. Check out how many colors Titanium can be, for example, when alloyed.

If you want fuschia adamantine fullplate with streaks of exotic green, it is possible.

Possible, albeit profoundly improbable, unless we're talking about a campaign in the Far Realms, on the Discworld, or in some isolated sub-layer of ever-shifting Limbo that has gone from "Chaotic Neutral" to "Chaotic Silly," complete with ambulatory Left Turn Only signs and gangs of old ladies that attack you with their handbags.

I can only imagine the look on the dwarven smith's face when someone tries to hire him to forge fuschia-and-green adamantine fullplate -or lord forbid, the reaction of the drow when their weaponry and armor suddenly turns neon. ^_^;

Dipping red hot metal in water is very very bad. You always cool it in oil (whose purpose is solely to restore the properties of the steel, since you lose quality when you heat it)
Bane

11-19-04, 05:52 PM
Did I say red hot? I just remember turning strips of metal different colors in chemistry class by heating and dipping them. But it shouldn't be any worse for the sword or hammer than attacking a fire elemental.
Starmage21

11-19-04, 06:00 PM
a properly tempered blade can handle some heat, but if you were to cool metal that was to be forged into a sword in water, it would either break during the forging process or break the first time it bounced off someones sword, shield, or armor.

When you were in chemistry class, keeping the quality of those strips of metal wasnt a priority, just coloring them was :D

You better calm the hell down, kiddo. I don't know why you brought ME into this. All I said was that it's not really important - all that matters is fun factor. If the gaming book outright said "Adamantine is bright green" but everyone involved wanted it to be blue - well it's a cosmetic change that doesn't effect the rules in any way - so who cares - change it.

I never said there's something intrinsically wrong with all of you coming to a consensus - I said it's fairly pointless and in the end, doesn't really matter.

And I wouldn't consider just deciding on a colour to be arbitrary in a negative sense. It's a matter of getting on with things and not getting bogged down in something as trivial as the colour of a metal in a fantasy roleplaying game. Just decide on a colour.

Furthermore, my statements were based on everything everyone else has said. It appears that there is no CURRENT source that states the colour of the metal. The only quotes I have noticed have come from 2nd Edition sources.. which don't mean much anymore as things have changed.

If you want to go with that, fine. But remember that 2nd Edition info is currently no more "core" than what.. I.. say. I could say it's pink. My word holds as much water to a 3E player than a 2E handbook does.

Either way, you need to cool your damn jets, kid. Don't start telling me I'm being argumentative when I was SIMPLY STATING that you can choose any colour you like if there appears to be no "official 3.5 (or 3.0) 'ruling' ."

I never downed anyone, I said going on and on about it wasn't necessary for the aforementioned reasons. And in no way was I uncivil.

If you have a problem with Osiris - take it up with him. But leave me the hell out of it - because I didn't do a damn thing to deserve your impish little commentary on -my- behaviour.

Actually, in greek mythology Herakles, aka Hercules, was chained to a rock with the only metal strong enough to resist his god-like strength. Guess what the name of that metal was... Adamantium, freely translated into adamantine, adamant, etc. Since it's root comes from old Greek and has been translated from an ancient variant of a different language, you can probably feel free to call it whatever you want.

As for how it looks, there are several pictures of adamantine (which is the name of a metal referred to in the DMG) golems, adamantine swords and other things of adamantine. The quality of the pictures varies, but they all agree on one thing. It's dark. Anything beyond that is up to you. Besides the color could probably be changed by adding the right chemical compounds during refining or smelting anyway.

If you're going by what Wolverine is made of, he has silver-colored metal in both the movie and the comics.

Cheer up people, it's friday! :pint:

I love the way this thread has gone on: from not reading a post (it's not some people's fault they were taught to call the final product by the mineral's name, but some should really read what is being written on the very board they post back...), to blatantly disregarding a notion...

Hey, I know how DMing really is the lifeblood of a campaign, but when one goes core, one goes core; simple as that. If you want gold, or blue, or even pink adamantine, fine with that, just don't say that's how you remember it or stuff, say that's how the thing looks in your campaign, OK? No real player is going to argue if you give him the facts, and most DMs will accept even a core-rule change in someone's campaign if for the best, more so when it comes to innocent fluff instead of crunch!

Vahenir; first of all im not a kid.

Well, utmost apologies - but I could only judge from your behaviour and typing style - I assumed, perhaps poorly, that you were on the young side.

Second of all You say it doesnt matter, thats fine, thats your opinion. But if the only point of your post is to say it doesnt matter than u arent being very helpfull.

Says whom? You? Since when are you the defining judge of what is and is not a useful/helpful post? I made as many, if not more, valid points in my posts as anyone else in this thread and since this is, after all, a public message board, and since I in no way attempted to flame, degrade, or insult anyone - I am entitled to post my thoughts.

Just because I am posting that I disagree with the -need- to debate the colour of a metal does not make my post immediately worthless because I'm not actually engaging in said debate. Beyond that, in a way I did engage, by pointing out that there is no, so far as I am aware, 3.0 or 3.5 "ruling" on what colour adamantine is,

Nobody is getting bogged down, i dont see you as being constructive at all if your contribution amounts to "Who cares?" well the answer is myself and my group care.

You are going on and on in this thread after it has been made fairly clear that the DMG and the PH do not openly state what colour adamantine is. That -is- getting bogged down. Making a post with VALID POINTS that amounts to "who cares" is just as constructive as someone saying "well in 2E it was like this." So you can see me as not adding constructively to the conversation - but no one named you judge of all that is worthwhile - keep that in mind.

And my suggestion to you and your group is to get over it. It's a colour. Choose one and move on. If the DMG and PH don't say what colour it is - move on.

My jets are on even keel all im saying is if u wont contribute in a postive way, all u wanna do is nay say, than why post at all.

Because even "nay-saying" can be done in a postiive, contributive, useful way. Whether you want to believe that or not is irrelevant.

So kid, cool your damn jets.. u are the one posting in my thread with nothing constructive to add.

I called you kid so now you think it'll be.. ironic, or intelligent? - to call me kid in return? Do you know how pathetic and lame that is? Grow up.

Further, I have already established that just because I gainsaid the point of this thread does not make it any less constructive than any other post. The ONLY thing that could make my post NEGATIVE and deconstructive is if someone had posted BEFORE me and had posted an ACTUAL 3.0 OR 3.5 RULING on what colour adamantine is. So again, cool your damn jets, have a cigarette, drink a cup of coffee and calm the hell down. You're acting like a jerk with absolutely no reason to do so.

I posted my opinion on the entire matter - if you don't like that, you're welcoem to ignore the post and move on. That's the wonder of message boards. There was no need for you to attack me to begin with. So you brought this entire thing on your own head, and you have the power to stop it by discontinuing this useless banter.

Of course we can make it any color we want, duh its make believe thanks for pointing out the obvious.

You're quite welcome. If more people kept the obvious in mind, there would be less reason to point it out.

You are the one who snidely stated "Here is an idea maybe it looks like whatever the hell the DM says it looks like" geee sounds kinda rude to me...

Rude? Then maybe you are just a confrontational person who looks for bad intentions and ill motives in every person you come across who says something you don't like. My comment, which you quoted above, was meant in good humour and with gentle sincerity. It was not intended to be rude or confrontational in any way and it seems you are the ONLY one who couldn't see that.

So again, calm yourself. You've imagined transgressions against you and have placed yourself in a position of absolute judge of what is and is not positive or useful. I'd suggest backing off for a minute and thinking this through before attacking my motives and attitude further.
LordOfHavoc

I have not placed myself in Judge of anything, this is your imagination not reality. I think I make a valid point; how is 'Who cares?" a contructive point? Obviously some people do, as there have been many posts to this thread besides the two of us. You are the one who started the insults by calling me a kid and telling me to calm the hell down cause I dont agree with your attitude. Sounds like a case of the pot calling the kettle black. I mean do u just go up and down the board posting 'who cares' and calling that helpfull? My group and I have decided and moved on. We've decided to go with the blue-black as that seems to be the most prevelant answer. that doesnt mean I cant see if anyone else can find a more current listing for the color as pertains to 3.0 or 3.5.
Vahenir

11-20-04, 03:46 PM
I have not placed myself in Judge of anything, this is your imagination not reality.

Quite the contrary, my friend. You claimed that my post was -not- constructive. That is a judging statement. You did not ask -how- it is constructive, you openly said it is "not helpful." Which is a matter of opinion.

I think I make a valid point; how is 'Who cares?" a contructive point?

It is not. So please note that I did not post the words "Who cares?" I said much more than that and even though the -essence- of the post was "who cares" it was not put in such a way. It was put forth in a valid way with points such as - there doesn't seem to be any official word and thus it is up to the DM and the DM should simply abjudicate the situation and move on.

There is a big difference between making a point that basically means it doesn't matter - and a post that only says the words "who cares?"

Obviously some people do, as there have been many posts to this thread besides the two of us.

Not necessarily. I have posted in many threads to give advice where I didn't actually care about the subject matter. People posting their opinions or thoughts does not immediately represent that they actually care enough to debate it of their own accord. Furthermore, just because some people may genuinely care about the colour, does not preclude my ability to post my opinion that it really doesn't matter - and why.

You are the one who started the insults by calling me a kid and telling me to calm the hell down cause I dont agree with your attitude.

You're a bit confused here. I insulted no one. In case you missed it, I apologized for calling you a kid if I was wrong. It was not meant as an insult, it was a neutral term, the same way I call my female friends "dear." I call my nephew kid, I call my little brother (who is a teenager) kid, I called one of my ex-girlfriends, who was younger than me, KID. It's not a negative term, it's a neutral one, or sometimes an endearing one. Any negative connotations to the word "kid" are entirely in YOUR head.

Further, I told you to calm down because of the way you attacked my post for absolutely no reason. Because you percieved some elusive "attitude" that was never there in the first place. I never INSULTED you about it - I told you to calm down because you were acting ridiculous and confrontational for no reason whatsoever.

I mean do u just go up and down the board posting 'who cares' and calling that helpfull?

Oh sure. It's my hobby. C'mon - don't degenerate this thread into presumptious stupidity. We're having a mild disagreement, but that's okay. Don't make it more than that with statements like the above-quoted.

My group and I have decided and moved on. We've decided to go with the blue-black as that seems to be the most prevelant answer. that doesnt mean I cant see if anyone else can find a more current listing for the color as pertains to 3.0 or 3.5.

I absolutely agree. I never said there is anything intrinsically wrong with asking the colour. Just that there's no reason to get too caught up in it. Note I never said you definitely WERE, just that no one (generally speaking) needs to. That the DM can, and should, choose whatever his players most enjoy.

You've imagined insults, misrepresented my intentions, and made general, sweeping observations about my motives and attitude. I don't appreciate any of that and I don't feel it was necessary on your part.

So once again, I say just calm down.

If you took some grave offense to my original post, you needed only to ask me to remove it in a polite and kind way and I would have had (and still have) no problem with that whatsoever, given a valid reason. If you want me to remove it, simply ask nicely. It was never my intention to cause such an uproar with you, nor to fight over stupid things.

But realize that I have acted as civily as possible and you have done nothing but attack my attitude and my right to post my own thoughts in a civil manner (and even attacked the notion that I did so in a civil manner).

And if none of this post pleases you, you are absolutely free to contact a moderator and ask them yourself if I have been uncivil.

And as far as I'm aware.. there are no 3.0 or 3.5 books that state what colour adamantine is. My players and I, depending on my players, will alternate. The three top colours are: Bright Grey, Dark Grey, Dull Black.

I always thought of it as metal-colored. ;)

Just sort of a dull grey. Gunsmoke grey I think is a color I've heard. Probably something like that.

Then again, people tend to get upset with me when I start equating adamantine with tungsten-carbide and mithril with aluminum..

Isn't Aluminum in its natural state really soft and pliable? I had a plate of aluminum once, and it sure was soft, but then it was really thin too...

I am new to the boards but .. here it come my two cents......

As to marvel comics there have been many examples of admantium, captain americas shield is a admantium-vibranium alloy, cybers exo-skin was, and of course ultron's body was made of it, the complete list is waaaayyy to long to list.

but to the actual point of this post :
I believe that the 3.5 handbook or the DMG actually states that the metal is a black color.

as for tempering steel to put it in water would most likely end up twisting the blade ..Indeed I have seen this happen .. almost looked like a corkscrew. but for other applications water is sometimes used.

I may be mistaken but I believe titanium is itself an alloy.

but those are only what I think

Adamantine: This ultrahard metal adds to the quality of a weapon or suit of armor. Weapons fashioned from adamantine have a natural ability to bypass hardness when sundering weapons or attacking objects, ignoring hardness less than 20. Armor made from adamantine grants its wearer damage reduction of 1/– if it’s light armor, 2/– if it’s medium armor, and 3/– if it’s heavy armor. Adamantine is so costly that weapons and armor made from it are always of masterwork quality; the masterwork cost is included in the prices given below. Thus, adamantine weapons and ammunition have a +1 enhancement bonus on attack rolls, and the armor check penalty of adamantine armor is lessened by 1 compared to ordinary armor of its type. Items without metal parts cannot be made from adamantine. An arrow could be made of adamantine, but a quarterstaff could not.

Only weapons, armor, and shields normally made of metal can be fashioned from adamantine. Weapons, armor and shields normally made of steel that are made of adamantine have one-third more hit points than normal. Adamantine has 40 hit points per inch of thickness and hardness 20.Sorry, no mention of color.

My group stands behind 'blue-black'.

Make sure that you are perfect before you cast the first stone

As to the original subject:

I would say that it is the color that the DM states, but if you want something from the book. It looks like black, hinting to blue or green, is the most common.

I'd like to point out that in many countries that language "names" are not capitalized.

Titanium is an element, and it's on the periodic table as Ti, and is surprisingly high up, with the light elements. I don't know if they use it in its pure form or alloy it, though...

Side note: My glasses have titanium frames labeled "Pure Titanium... No Nickel Allergy"

Something else I read that suprised me: When I was reading my Chemistry book back in high school, it listed titanium as one of the 10 most common elements on Earth: The reason it's not used as much as steel is that it's hard to extract, much like aluminum was for much of history.

Back on topic: When I think of adamantite, flat black comes to mind, sometimes with gray areas near edges.

Well first off theres no such thing as "Adamantine" I believe theres lots of threads that talk about this do a search. Adamantium is first credited in Marvel comics and is what is laced in Wolverines body, so a good bet is adamantine would be the colour of his claws. I too have heard of a dark blue black coloured metal, remember adamantine in D&D comes from meteorites...hope that helps.

addy and mithril have been in alot of games like runescape and morrowind.

Well, In the complete arcana there is an PrC called Green Star Adept. I slowly transforms into a Starmetal statue. While gaining levels the Green star Adept gains adamantine DR! SO may guess is adamantine is green.

However in the intro of the GSA it states that one may also use a different material known for its HARDNESS. Like Quartz, Saphire, Diamond etc.

Given the fact that Adamantine comes from the word adamant, which just mean some real hard metal I can only conclude that adamantine is nothing more then a name given to any hard and solid metal and therefore it is the color of the metal.

So if you want your adamantine to be a blueish meteoric metal it'll do!

in runescape its green but i think it looks like wolverines claws which is just a shiny metal

The Green Star Adept probably gains DR/Adamantine because it eventually becomes a construct. Most constructs have DR/Adamantine. Following the same logic, you could say that adamantine is flesh, iron, stone, or clay colored. ;)

Of course, you can say it is whatever color you want . . .

I hate it when people make crude judgement calls when others have already posted official material on the matter:
- Blackish coloured, has a green tint.
- If seen under artificial light, it has bright purplish highlights.

You know, kind of like alexandrite, the yellowish-green gem that looks all red when artificially lit.

I know that anyone can do as he likes in his campaign, but acting as if there is no say on the matter and throwing judgement calls around based on Marvel Comics is at least comical (pun fully intented!).

It would help if I had more background . . .

I always thought it was a matte black; as the popular consensus goes, however, there is no official 3.5 ruling.

In response to LordOfHavoc's post #40:
Since typing is currently the medium of communication on these boards, you may want to type not just so that others can decipher what you mean, but so that others will come to favorable conclusions about the person behind the text; in most cases eloquence in typing is more important than eloquence in speech, as the words portray not only what you are saying, but who you are.

The thing I find most amusing about all this (even more amusing than LordofHavoc) is that about 1/3 into all this someone produced a WOTC ruling, and was waved off by someone saying, "Well sure, if you want the 'official' ruling...."

...and no, that wasn't a compliment.

That's funny...I saw a 'jet-black' reference from the MM2 (not completely 3.5-compatible AFAIK) and two conflicting references from 2nd edition, but absolutely nothing about official 3.5 rulings. Probably hasn't changed, but sometimes I just play the devil's advocate :D

Phantom Lord: I type in the hopes that I will be understood, as long as that happens; thats all I care about. If people are going to base their opinions on somebody purley on the fact that they type the letter 'u' rather than the word 'you' or something along those lines, well that says something about them doesnt it...

trapspringer: I never saw an offical ruling, closest someone came was in a picture of a creature in a MM. But it has not to my knowledge been confirmed that it was made of adamantium

Dipping red hot metal in water is very very bad. You always cool it in oil (whose purpose is solely to restore the properties of the steel, since you lose quality when you heat it)

Thats for hardening after smithing it. To color it, you take the raw material (let say a stripe of steel, strip it in piqumented water, then smith it and afterworth it is hardened in oil, at least for a weapon). Cheap and thicker kinds of steel are hardened in water normally.

But the whole process shouldn't function with Adamantine, at least its unlikely, because aside of Iron most metals don't integrate pigments easily or at all.

That "official" ruling Trapspringer spoke of is this:

According to Volo's Guide to All Things Magical for 2E Forgotten Realms, Adamantine is a black, almost oily-looking metal. When natural light reflects from it, it reflects a distinct greenish hue. When magical light reflects from it, it's a vibrant purple-white reflection.

A 2nd Edition source. Which is not only no longer considered CORE, but it is only as reliable as anyone else's personal opinion, because a LOT changed from 2E to 3E and so it is only conjecture to assume Adamantine is the same in 3E as it was in 2E.

IT VERY WELL MAY BE. I'm not saying it isn't. I'm just saying a 2E source means nothing to 3E and therefore is not considered an "official" ruling for a 3E game.

The fact remains there is still no mention of an official word in 3E.
