The way I understand this is for weapons, armor, and shields, when you want to add more enhancement bonus (or enchantments), you subtract the price of the existing weapon from the cost of the weapon you want to make, and the difference is what you pay for an upgrade.

But if I want to add to my + 2 amulet of health, a +2 to my wisdom, I pay 1.5 times the cost of a periapt of wisdom +2.

But what about if I want to make my amulet of health +2 into an amulet of health +4? I dont' feel this really is very clearly addressed. It is an enhancement bonus; I can add more enhancement bonus to weapons and armor, why not an item? For example, a +2 amulet costs 4000, +4 costs 16,000. Couldn't I just pay the 12,000 difference? Or would I do (16,000-4,000)x1.5 = 18 000? Granted it would be cheaper to just sell the item and buy one with the new bonus, but my point is that I don't understand which method is correct. Or maybe you just add a totally separate enhancement of +2 to health, which would be 4000x1.5 = 6,000? But then you have two "separate" enhancement bonuses on the same item, does it stack?

Oh, so confused.

Magic item pricings work exactly like weapon pricings in that regard. You upgrade the item, just like you upgrade armor or a weapon.

So an amulet of constitution +2 (which costs 4,000) would cost 12,000 to upgrade to an amulet of constitution +4.

The half again price rule only applies when putting more than one ability on any one item, for example, having both wisdom and constitution on an amulet.

If you had an amulet of constitution +2, and wanted to make it an amulet of constitution +4 and wisdom +2, you would have to pay 18,000 gold (the full price of the amulet would be 22,000, 16,000 from the constitution and 6,000 from the wisdom, but you have already paid 4,000 from the +2 constitution).

Couldn't I just pay the 10,000 difference?
In other words, yes, that is exactly what you are supposed to do. Note that the half again increase only applies to different abilities.

And you can't have an amulet of constitution +2 and constitution +2. Or, at least, it wouldn't do anything more than +2. ;)

Make sense?

! Somebody's confused in there somewhere. An amulet of health (+2) costs 4,000 gp, not 6,000. Adding a wisdom enhancement bonus of +2 to such an amulet would cost 4,000 x 1.5 = 6,000 gp. Upgrading the enhancement to constitution to +4 would cost 10,000 gp. Doing both would cost 10,000 gp + 6,000 gp and the bonuses would "stack"-that is, such an amulet would give you both a +4 enhancement to constitution and a +2 enhancement to wisdom. If you continued to upgrade the wisdom bonus later, you'd have to continue to apply 1.5 to however much it would normally cost as a single item, such as another (24,000 - 6,000) 18,000 gp to make it +4.

Most of this appeared addressed by the master, above, but I hope I helped sort it out a teensy bit.

Yes, gah, sorry, I don't know why I kept typing 6000!!! You're right its 4000. Man I'm getting sloppy. I'll fix it with an edit.

Oops.

Yes. :)

I think the confusion spread. ;)
