Adding reach to unarmed attacks [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-09-06, 09:04 AM Hi guys,

I am currently designing an important NPC, a human monk, and want him to be able to achieve the effect that can be seen from the unarmed fighter in the topmost video clip here:

Sort of an invisible fist/ki projection thing... I am not sure how to call it, actually.

Anyway, the only thing I found to allow me this effect is a feat from Sandstorm, Serpent Fang, which adds 5 ft. reach to one attack only.

Does anyone else have any ideas? Special properties on Amulet of Mighty Fists or something like that?

Maybe a prestige class?

It lets you make a 30' ranged attack for 3d6 at the expense of 2 uses of Stunning Fist.

06-09-06, 09:20 AM If you're OK with a homebrewed solution, I would think that a first level spell granting 10 ft reach to your unarmed strikes would be reasonably balanced (by comparison to enlarge person). You could then make a potion of it and have your monk drink it before the fight.

That character seems like an enlightened fist type (Complete Arcane). Some magic abilities (nothing flashy) mixed with unarmed fighting. Sacred Fist (Complete Divine) could maybe work as well.

Serpent Fang looks like it would do what you want it to. Note that it only affects one attack in the round.

There is a feat in Lords of Madness that gives you an additional 5' reach called Inhuman Reach. It simply adds to your reach, no "once per round" stuff or anything. It has a prereq of Aberration Blood feat (from same book). This might not fit the concept of your character though, as it suggests a lineage from Aberrations. Its also somewhat costly for a monk-like character, since they are usually wanting on feats as is.

06-09-06, 09:55 AM The Warshaper class from Complete Warrior can accomplish this, but you'll have a near impossible time getting your monk to qualify for the class.
