SiuiS 09-19-07, 07:23 AM	good morn. I looked around both here, and the magic and spells area, and this particular forum seems to be the best place to inquire... As part of a crack down on in-game arguements, I am my group's designated "rules Arbiter". So far so good, with the exception of the following problem (which, thankfully, came up after our session). I know, with surety, that not all magic items are created equal*. This is reflected in the price. A ring of Invisibility is priced above just what it's base price would be. Well, I think, but it's pretty late... Anyway. My problem is, one of the players, an artificer, has come up with the idea of making every room (cabin, rather?) in a ship he'll be making into its own Mordenkainen's Magificent Mansion to hold more crewmen. I am mighty sure that doing so would not require a mere 182,000 gold pieces (7th level x 13th caster level x 2,000 for a generic item) or even just 364,000 gold (adding in the x2 multiplier for not having any space limitations), if only because MMM is far too much of a boon if it's a permanent item*. Hell, I've even almost gotten an agreement out of him. Except, I don't have any hard evidence saying so. So my question (which has come strangely late in the post...) is, aside from these boards, can I find either an item with MMM as a prerequisite (preferably an item I could easily retrofit the price from) or anything in writing that says items can be marked up in creation price if their utility exceeds the obviously low price; common sense has already been used, and examples such as bracers of true striking (or something similar) aren't quite good enough. I've checked all I could in the limited time I have, but it's late, and I need sleep. If this strikes you as a pointless request, or you'd rather I look on my own, no problem. tarkin 09-19-07, 10:49 AM	The best way to price these things is to start off with an existing magic item. TThe basic benefits he is asking for is not really a 7th level spell, because of the fact that it is permanent and has lots of open doors. Sure, you can use the Spell as a pre-req for making it, but that is not the power the item represents. What he really wants is: 1. XD space, making it larger than normal. 2. An unseen servant type effect to clean it, except it is visible. The unseen servant is relatively cheap. Let's just give him that for free as part of the item. The XD space in the DMG is called a Portable Hole. His version has several of them. They are not closeable, but he does get the free unseen servant. Each Portable hole grants approximatley 283 cubic feet, and costs 20,000. Lets round it up to 300 feet, after all, he is losing a of utility by building them into the boat. That would be 100 cubic feet for about 6,666 gp. So I would ask him how many extra cubic feet he wants and charge him 6,666 gp for every extra 100 cubic feet. Give him the unseen servant butler thing for free. pre req is Magnificent Mansion spell.
