Has anyone seen or made rules for more powerful ioun stones than the ones listed in the DMG? They're such handy little things...

Twice the cost of any slotted item (e.g. a Headband of Intellect ioun stone would cost 72kgp).

Since I like sneaky characters, I prefer to make unslotted rings, since it's less obvious when you're in disguise ('Is that your signet ring, madame, or is that a Cloak of Resistance +5 in disguise?').

speaking of magical items in non-standard slots, what limit is there to nipple or tongue piercings, tatoos, etc. ? if there is already a thread on that (probably, but I simply can't find one), please tell me...

In the last game I played in, we all joined the mage's guild and were awarded ioun stones which were invisible when equipped (unless you were wearing your own), granted 1 bonus level, and allowed certain types of divination and communication spells that would otherwise be impossible. For example, you could cast message and reach anyone in the guild from anywhere on the same plane as long as you knew their name.

Course the mages ended up using the stones to scry on us so they could kill us...

Edit: there are rules for tattoos in various sourcebooks. Each type of tattoo seems to have it's own limits associated. There are no rules for piercings at all that I know of, but I think that it would be reasonable to cost them as non-slotted items. The rules are there for balance reasons, and to break them should cost.

Check the psionics board for a thread on psionic tattoos. I think the threads title was "Getting Re-Wired," or something close to that. It was chocked full of tattoo-goodness.

I once had a dm allow a character of mine to craft a circlet (took up the hat/headband slot) that had a perfectly round hollow loop that circled your head. You put ioun stones in it, and they would orbit inside the loop, granting you their benefit. I think it cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000gp. I was sad, though, because the DM wouldn't let my character get the thing surgically attached to his head.

What was the interest of this circlet for the Ioun stones, they already circle around the head

It kept them out of your eyes and made it harder for people to steal them.

Blinded by his Ioun stones :D
I have a character who has around ten of them, special, they don't have to orbit, you just have to carry them.
Put them in an adamantine tube

Yeah, unless you have a psecial item that allows you to confer items without hte orbiting, they do have to orbit. Its in the description of the item.
