I am very new to the D&D world and have just recently started to play. I am very impressed with its easy ability to be played, of course given a DM who knows how to play.

Which brings me to my point I want to make a new character and the only time I get to see the DM is when we all gather to play, and with all the other players I cant get two words in about a new character, all we have time for due to the location is about 5-7 hrs (depending on the shop owner who also plays with us)
I play a 5th lvl Rouge and 1st lvl Assassin and with the enemies my DM throws at our party , there just is no place for this character exept for unlocking doors and getting rid of traps, other than that, he is battle WORTHLESS even with the gear I have for him.

So I want to make another Character I have done all I can for the character That i could remember how to do when I made my first character, the Rouge. I Stopped at HP. I have no Idea where to look to get his modifiers for STR DEX ext.... and I also do not know where to look to find an appropriate weapon for him So If at all I could get Advice for Armor or Weapons, Or even better a website I could go to to help me Figure out skills Weapon selections and Armor I could Use.

With that Said PLEASE HELP THE SAMURIA.

Str mod is based on Str stat.

SRD or PHB helps.

Rogues are really good in combat though. Did you ever flank the enemy? Did you ever go first in Initiative? You can sneak attack.
Anytime enemy denied dex or flanked: you can sneak attack.

At level 5 when flanking (with TWFing feat): you can deal assuming both attacks hit: average of 8d6 (4d6 with each attack, 3d6 sneak attack and 2 shortswords) so average 28 damage.
Which is pretty good for level 5.
In fact, post build here and we can explain stat mods.

What's a "samuria"? :uh-huh:

Personally, at the risk of flaming, if your player can't spell the class name properly, they shouldn't play that class. I don't care what your excuse (you're texting, it's okay to post informally and make typos), etc. Prove to me you're educated.

The same goes for rogues. You're either a sneak or a cosmetic application.

Huh?

Truly, the OA Samurai is better than the Complete Warrior Samurai, but I don't think anyone said anything about that.

OP, how are the combats that you cannot contribute? What is it your character is built for? If you are the trapspringer that is certainly an important role. We can probably give you tips on how to help in combat if you give some more information, however I doubt any Rogue could be the "main" damage dealer in a party (nor could a Samurai for that matter).

I thought that the OA samurai was now useless. Their key class ability - the ancestral daisho - has absolutely no purpose, since weapons can now be re-enchanted anyway. Now, all they really are is fighters with less bonus feats.

Consider. The +2 longsword. 8,300 gp, yes?

Well, not quite, actually. The moment it enters your hands, it's only worth 4,150 resale.

Unless you've got the capability to sacrifice it to your ancestors, who'll take it at it's full face value.

Essentially, if your buddy the Fighter is upgrading his weapon all the time, then he's down by the entire value of his weapon as compared to you.

Just curious, but what kind of enemies are making your rogue/assassin worthless? And how? Roguish characters tend to be very resourceful and versitile, and unless you are in a undead-themed campaign, your rogue should be able to contribute to combat quite nicely as long as you can flank.

Ok, pardon my ignorance.
Break that down further for this old fart. How are you coming up with multible d6 damage rolls for short swords per hit without assuming some sort of enchant on the weapon? Am I missing something?

1d6 Shortsword hit, 3d6 Sneak Attack, as long as all attacks in a round qualify for sneak attack, you get it on every attack.

Wow. Talking about being educated  OA is 3.0. Being a English major doesn't make you educated, just a grammer troll.

For the Rouge to make him more battle worthy. It depends on your style, from what I gathered you want to be apart of the front lines, So take Dodge, mobility, and Elusive Target (have to site which book later.). You don't have to be a great attacker when your opponents can do the job for you with the last feat. Vexing Flanker gives you +4 to flank, Combat tactition gives you and all allies +2 a/d to the target when hit with a successful AoO. Look into Ambush feats from CS.

Samurai is a hard class to pull off may want to look into Paladin instead.

The OA classes surpass the supposed 3.5e revision. It's a good thing Complete Warrior have other interesting material like updated feats first found in OA to satisfy my $30 purchase, but the CW samurai is third-rate compared to OA samurai.

If you ignore material simply because they're 3.0e, then you're missing a lot. That I can't help you. Get yourself an OA book.

I have an OA book . The 3.0 version got rebuilt because it was Fighter with better skills and saves. The feats of the Samurai are linked and limited to the Clan. Im not saying that 3.0 didn't have cool ideas.

Wow really the feats came from that book  . where the requirements have completely changed between editions UH- OH:eek: . The Benefits changed as well GASP. Im in such dismay.

The 3.0 code of conduct is more insanely stupid than the 3.5 Paladin code of conduct. Lose the family name or kill yourself whoop dee doo.

I can agree that the 3.5 Samurai class royally sucks I give you that. THis is due to the Strong holding the player to chose Charisma as a top 2 stat, and Intimidate as a skill for benefit of the class features. Given your enemies a -2 to everything as a move Action can change the tides at times, but a Ranger is better.

I ignore 3.0 as it is not on par with 3.5. Lets just say a lot of crap got nerfed from 3.0

firstly, to the OP
-get alone time w/ your DM. good character development is hard when there are a bunch of chatty bastards all scrambling for the spotlight. if ever the statement "less is more" meant something, it's in-game. less PCs = more time for each one
-assassins worthless in combat? um, isn't Death Attack pretty self-explanatory? consider Penetrating Strike (dungonescape); 1/2 SA dice vs. creatures normally immune (undead, plants, constructs). you're team should augment you, not vice versa. that is, you don't move to help Ftr, he moves to help you (flank). scout ahead first, then engage, never go in guns blazing or they know the full measure of your resolve/power too soon.
-use the SRD listed previously, but ideally, you're gonna' have to get a Player's Handbook. upside is they're cheap as Hell given all the sales pre-empting 4th Ed. every PC @ table should have one for themselves, but namely to assist DM and gameflow; someone could look up a spell while another is on a skills/feat questions, etc. multitask w/ team mentality
-as for your "sam'err'eea'" :D i'm like most of these ppl here, the Oriental Adv verison feels more "real", seems genuine, and has built-in plot hooks. update clan feats w/ your DM as there are alot of new ones. you can get the feel easy enough; say Scorpion stresses mobility and such, so ones similar to Spring Attack and things like that. Comp.Adv bastardized samurai horribly; 2 weapon fighting via full daisho was dishonorable, save for Dragon Clan (signuature style). fighting other samurai w/out katana (2 handing) was also terribly dishonorable/insulting. etc. etc.
Mindolin

10-25-07, 02:33 PM
Do not update the Oriental Feats yourself, it's much easier to just grab the issue of Dragon with Pirates/Ninja/Dinosaurs. It has an update in it for OA. I highly suggest OA Samurai, simply because whoever made the Complete Warrior Samurai obviously read too much Go Rin No Sho, without understanding that much of it. Also because the Scorpion Clan is my favorite.

I really don't know which one it is off the top of my head, but one moment and I shall check. It's a pretty good issue, anyway, so I recommend it.

It is issue 318.

By the way, don't take my word on Complete Warrior, at least for it's merits as a Samurai class, I still prefer the OA one, but others may find the CW version superior. (For some odd reason, those people are the safest from the Illithid threat)

Actually, yes I do. In D&D terms if a Samurai is in the same situation as the Paladin..... The Samurai loses only the ability to gain more levels of Samurai with no real disadvantage and become more powerful with levels of Fighter, or the Samurai dies and can not be resurrected because of honor issues. The Paladin actually takes major penalties for breaking the code. There is no death penalty to it, but the former argument of the Samurai for code of conduct is actually really lame when the Paladin actually takes penalties. You may argue about an ex-monk, but a monk has no code of conduct :bored:. Also the monk is more disadantaged compared to the Samurai in the ways of how they use abilities. A Samurai keeps all class abilities while using armor, while the monk can not.

:bored: I'm amazed you didn't think of that earlier.

Wow Role play isn't that hard, or obsolete. Your just a fool who doesn't understand the unstable mechanics of the 3.0 Samurai :bored:. Role play is just as good with Cwar. You can do the same clan ideas through the CWar as you can with OA. The only difference is you would be using Character feats. There is nothing wrong with picking feats for character concept, but it only seems that the CWar makes the Samurai more watered down and doesn't have enough umph to Role play. If you can only role play to the book rules then you shouldn't be role playing.

Stick to grammar rules that way you actually know what you're talking about.

For OP
- If want a mechanical type Samurai use the OA because it has far better machanics for what you want just get DM approval

- If CWAR is the only option. Intimidating Strike PHB2, Weapon Focus(bastard sword), Power Attack, Improved Bull Rush, Shock Trooper, Knockback, Heavy Armor Specialization, Greater Heavy Armor Specialization.

- If you want to go role play basis pick feats that you feel the character would have learnt or would have been clan oriented.

In many ways you can make a better Samauri with a Factotum with a single level dip in Marshal or Warblade since he can use the Samauri class Iajutsu skill better.

It is so easy to improve on the base Samauri class. Things like a few level dips in Warblade, Marshal (To motivate Intelligence), Two levels of F for some bonus feats or Swashbuckler - 3. Thow in a level or two of Crusader and Sword Sage later in the build to pick up a few more manuevers.

Something like Warblade or Ranger - 1, Factotum - 3, Marshal - 1, Psion -1, Slayer - 10 with BAB averaging the PC has +14 BAB and Psion - 10 known powers and power points at level 16. You could do a lot with those remaining 4 levels. Continue increasing your psion levels or take a few ToB dips for manuevers

Congratulations, mate. I've seen a few forums squabbles, but seldom has someone jumped to personal insults so quickly. I must admit that I'm quite impressed. If that was sarcasm, it sure was hidden quite deep.

Anyway, as for advice for the CWar samurai... Ugh, just get a way to deal extra damage on your attacks (elemental enhancements, for example), because TWF builds sometimes have a problem doing enough damage. Keep strength high and don't forget charisma... Oh, for crying out loud, just look at the Divine Mind handbook (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/implosion.htm) and use the overall idea. Trust me, it's for the good of your character and yourself.

The OA samurai strikes me as more versatile and tbh more accurate for all it's worth. If the RP requirement irks you (in which case you probably don't want to play a samurai anyway), just play a psychic warrior, fighter, warblade and/or any of the 10+ relevant prestige class and call yourself a samurai - you'll have a good deal of choice among generally much better features than what the CW offers. It's not as if you need levels in a "samurai" class or PrC to be one (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0209.html).

Apart from that, the rogue5/assassin1 is a hard build to screw up. Just how is this character not contributing? +4d6 sneak attack should be enough to do damageto anything you can sneak attack - and between catching your enemies flat-footed and tumbling around for a flank attack you shouldn't have a problem doing that. It's too early for any fortification items to appear, and your DM shouldn't be hurling only undead at you (and in the latter case, iirc there were some crystals that could be added to a weapon to allow you to sneak attack undead).

Edit: mind you, that was more an issue for the classes forum.

-firstly, kids, play nice. no need to academically or socially 1-up each other
-samurai; yeah i wish they'd have developed it better for CompWar, but they were in such fervor to get out the new 3.5 stuff, guess they rushed it...like alot of other books (hated CompDiv and a few others)

-OA's Sam is set for Rokugan which is excellent and all, but i just cannibalized it for Wa (Forgotten Realm's answer to feudal japan) and presto chango...it worked. i mean, the campaign practically wrote itself. old fish outta' water story...ie)eastern sam through portal or long boat ride, etc., hooks up w/ uncivilized westerners, compiles intel for his daimyo, whatever excuse you need for him "there". the flavor is immense and adherance to Bushido and samurai culture really helps glue PC parties and such. no nonsense. facilitated gameplay and was just another exotic feature to throw in game.

problem is no one is 100% on the Iajutsu stuff. it was pretty damn powerful in OA and we thought, "ah, how novel", but alot of ppl were concerned it became a power issue. they totally butchered it for 3.5ed though.
Iajutsu was perhaps intended for OA only and it's not like they're saying, we can only guess. i mean, it's a hard format to use, especially if you don't know any Eastern mythoi or culture. the oni are terribly harsh, Shadowlands, the heavilly regimented society, etc...i think maybe Iajutsu was just to compensate for an otherwise tough start for samurai.

what is a good working solution to it and any other class features/deviations in CompWar's samurai vs. OA's?

And what is so unstable about 3.0e samurai? :uh-huh:

Because it is not a Musashi clone?

Because it has levelled magic weapon feature that the 3.5e (misspelled) Kensai PrC now acquired?

Because you cannot ignore the organization of Rokugan clan bonus feats?

Because of the EX-Samurai entry that is culturally appropriate?

Hmmm.

You want a samurai? I'll give you a samurai. And no, you don't have to take levels in a class called "Samurai" to be a samurai (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0209.html).

This build's purpose is to replicate some of the more popular culture conceptions of the samurai, including but not limited to generally capable melee, special and precise techniques that are either more damaging or add extra effects besides "my target bleeds", focus-based attack and defense abilities, Sudden blinding speed and general mobility, combat awareness (and limited battlefield control, mostly useful against other humanoids), and a few other tidbits thrown in.

This build uses entirely Tome of Battle classes, though feats from various sources are used to round it out.

Start with a human. Because A) Humans are versatile, B) you need the feats, and C) because most people who want to play a samurai are probably going to want to be human. If it doesn't suit you, shift the feats around and drop something that doesn't appeal to you, like Evasive Reflexes.

The progression goes as follows:

1. Warblade (Adaptive Style, EWP [bastard sword])
2. Warblade
3. Warblade (Evasive Reflexes)
4. Crusader
5. Swordsage (Weapon Focus [Diamond Mind preferred weapons]*)
6. Warblade (Quick Draw)
7. Warblade (Combat Reflexes*)
8. Warblade
9. Warblade (Martial Stance [Thicket of Blades])
10. Warblade
11. Warblade (Improved Initiative*)
12. Warblade (Stand Still)
13. Warblade
14. Warblade
15. Warblade (Stormguard Warrior, Iron Heart Aura*)
16. Warblade
17. Warblade
18. Warblade (Steady Concentration)
19. Warblade (Unnerving Calm*)
20. Warblade

Crusader Maneuvers Known:
1 – Crusader’s Strike, Leading the Attack, Vanguard Strike, Douse the Flames, Charging Minotaur, Martial Spirit Stance
3 – Thicket of Blades Stance [gained at 9]

Warblade Maneuvers Known:
1 – Steel Wind [exchanged at 14], Sudden Leap, Sapphire Nightmare Blade [exchanged at 8], Stone Bones [exchanged at 6], Hunter’s Sense Stance
2 – Battle Leader’s Charge [exchanged at 10]
3 – Insightful Strike [gained at 6, exchanged at 12], Absolute Steel Stance, Iron Heart Surge
4 – Lightning Recovery [gained at 8], Mithral Tornado [exchanged at 18]
5 – Elder Mountain Hammer [gained at 10, exchanged at 16], Dancing Mongoose, Hearing the Air Stance
6 – Greater Insightful Strike [gained at 12], War Leader’s Charge
7 – Quicksilver Motion [gained at 14], Ancient Mountain Hammer
8 – Diamond Defense [gained at 16], Supreme Blade Parry Stance, Adamantine Hurricane
9 – Strike of Perfect Clarity [gained at 18], Time Stands Still

Swordsage Maneuvers Known:
1 –Moment of Perfect Mind
2 – Shadow Jaunt, Cloak of Deception, Action Before Thought, Flashing Sun, Emerald Razor, Flame’s Blessing Stance
6 – Desert Tempest, Step of the Dancing Moth Stance

In combat, you're mostly going to be utilizing Martial Spirit or Thicket of Blades - you'll either be so kickass you'll heal your ally's very wounds, or you'll make moving next to you a painful proposition. Your maneuvers available, both for attack and defense, are tremendous - if you're prepared for it, you can be making a concentration check for any of your saves, which at later levels (when you get Steady Concentration from Races of Stone) will allow you to take 10 on saves with a realistic minimum of +20 to the save. That's right, you'll be able to take a minimum of 30 on your save. Lovely, isn't it?

Crusader gives you maneuvers mostly useful for helping your fellow allies - a +4 morale bonus to your rogue ally, as he flanks his target (who can't leave the flanked space he's in, even with a 5 ft step, due to Stand Still), can mean a painfully devestating full-attack of TWFing Sneak Attacking goodness. It also has a delightfully useful feature of providing maneuvers as prerequisites for later maneuvers known, allowing you to swap out more of the lower level maneuvers that are no longer useful, and thus have a more broad, varied high level maneuver list, even with the few Warblade maneuvers known.

Swordsaage gives you a free Weapon Focus in your katana, a +1 to initiative checks, and until 20th level, mostly movement and defense themed maneuvers. Standard action 50 ft teleport, Make an attack as a touch attack, Greater Invisibility for a round... all the kind of stuff that, once moderately reflavored, can give you that lovely manga-esque psuedo-teleport movement and 'god-like speed' your samurai cliche warrior deserves.

Warblade is the real Meat and Potatoes of this build, naturally - your main attack abilities are going to be focused here, and will include both single strikes of great power (Greater Insightful Strike, Ancient Mountain Hammer, Strike of Perfect Clarity... mmmmmm) and psuedo-AoE attacks(Mithral and Adamantine Tornado, Time Stands Still, etc).

Statwise, you benefit from everything, but need not have any more then a few good scores. Strength is the main stat, with Con and Dexterity following closely, and Intelligence and Wisdom bonuses icing on the cake, and charisma, well... charisma is for that 6 rolled 18s character.

You're mobile, you're skilled (with at least 5 +int skill points every level, and likely at least a small bonus to int), you've got great combat potential, and you can either damage those that try to move past you to get to weaker party members, or use Evasive Reflexes to move in front of the foe. Imagine the look on the frothing barbarian's face when you use your AoO to either move in between him and your squishy wizard friend or stop him in his tracks with a Reflex Save (Stand Still, I love you so), disrupting his Leap-Attack charge... possibly mid-jump.

Is this the only possible samurai build? Hell no. Is it even the best possible samurai build? Hell no. Is it even the best all-purpose cliche samurai build? Well, probably not. But honestly, free your mind from the "My class is my life" bullharbl and think about 1) What you want your character to be able to do, 2) What mechanics that will require, and 3) what will give you those mechanics.

The Samurai class (OA or *shudder* CW) is not special. You are not your character class. You are not your harbling khakis. :)

Thank you. As icing on the cake, 20th level (taking your second level of swordsage) gives you what i consider the most entertaining maneuver: Path Through Oblivion (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2003/03/14)! Tome of Battle calls it Desert Tempest, of course, but that's because they're silly.
