the t0rc of heroic sacrifice, from the new magic item compendium... I think this is a great item, and i think it could go really great with one of my players. Though, they are still only 6th level.

Do we *really* think it is breaking something by granting this item. they have just finished a big dungeon and i think he deserves something nice, though the item is also a little bitter sweet.

i just don't see it being such a high-priced item, especially since they are ones taking the damage here... how do others feel about this item?

It is your game, you are free to grant this item if you wish.

6th vs 10th isn't that far off, but I wouldn't get into the habit of granting
them items that far beyond their level.

As part of the MiC they tried to mitigate (actually remove) the concept of random treasure that "sometimes" resulted in powerful magic items.

Give it... but remember to give them a bit less treasure (only a bit) for a while until you think you've rebalanced it. Not too much, something like 10-15% less than usual until you think it's enought

I think 6th to 10th is a pretty big jump. OTOH, the character is probably 2/3 the way til 7th, and the torc is smack in the middle of the 10th "item level", so it isn't on the closer side of 11th.

I know they went into great detail to attempt adjudicating how much an item should cost based, both on the fundamental rules already in place, but also on balance with this book. And I appreciate that, and am very impressed so far with this supplement (moreso than almost anything i've seen in a long while). It is this one item, coincidentally the one i want to bring into the game, that i feel isn't quite at the level where they've placed it. Does anyone else feel this way? Does anyone see any spells or feats or class features in the same realm as this power in the same level bracket?

Thanks for your feedback!

There are ways to give people things but to weaken them, so they are fair.

You could make it cursed, which they have to quest to remove.

You might consider a nasty "Drains some of your XP each time you use it" curse.

Or you could go for something more humourous, less clearly balanced.

The cost of the item is less than half the wealth a 6th level character is supposed to have according to the wealth guidelines. It is therefore not unreasonable.

Before you commit yourself to handing the item out, do an audit on the PCs current wealth levels, and make sure they're not close to being over-equipped for their level (ie are close to the wealth of a 7th level character). That will also give you an idea of whether you need to be a bit less lavish with the rewards (or a bit more lavish, perhaps, if they are under-equipped).

well i DO know that they are low on equipment, according to the tables. I usually like to play a little more sparse than the books, but one of the characters died along the way, so they had to raise her, biting into their funds a bit. however, it IS half the value of expected wealth for 6th level, that's a good point.
