Twin questions.

1) Where can I find detailed descriptions of airships, a la Final Fantasy style? Not just how to build them, but also weapon placements, size, crew, cargo capacity, range, etc.

2) All of the above, but online and, preferably, free.

i'm not really sure you can find this anywhere, really.

about the closest i can think of is the spelljammer setting. which got partially converted in a magazine somewhere. can't remember which one... pretty sure not Dragon. maybe Polyhedron? i also have no idea about which issue it is, so good luck.

anyways, as i recall (i've seen the article, just don't have it) it wasn't very thorough, but you might just have to make do.

as an alternative, you might try taking a look at Stormwrack (i don't know for sure, but i suspect the presence of rules for custom ships. make it fly, and presto, you've got a custom airship!). as another alternative, there are boards set up for campaign settings that no longer receive official support. you might try there for spelljammers. of course, you'd have to ignore all the spelljamming info (unless you plan on spelljamming too) and just use the stuff for when you are in atmospheres, but it's probably your best bet, IMO.

Stormwrack does have a little bit about Flying ships, and ships that can go from one plane to another plane. Just look at Stormwrack and it will tell you.

high, you want Airships by baston press. ISBN 15926-30006.

unfortunetly it's not WotC, it's not free, and it's not online. but it does have everything you asked for, and a little bit more as well. personally the only thing that makes me recomend it is the fact that it's the only resource of it's kind that i know about (it's not even particularily easy to translate into D&D item creation).

I don't have the book so I don't know all the details, but doesn't Eberron have Airships?

I'm working on ships for my Ere CS.

Here's the formula and the feat I use:

Craft Airship Core
Prerequisite: Caster level 5
Benefit: You can create any airship core whose prerequisites you meet.

Crafting an airship core takes one day for each 1,000 gp in its base price. To craft an airship core, you must spend 1/25 of its base price in XP and use up raw materials costing one-half of its base price.

Pricing Formula – maximum speed x (carry weight/2000) x maneuverability modifier x100

Maneuverability modifier
Clumsy 0*
Poor 1
Average 2
Good 3
Perfect 5
*airships cannot have a clumsy maneuverability
