Aiselne Drossel

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h57/Sleepwalker13666/tira.jpg

Exotic Weapon
Cost: 250 gp
Damage (s): 1d6
Damage (m): 1d8
Critical: 18x2
Range Increment: 10 Ft Melee/ 20 Ft Thrown
Weight: 16 lb
Type: Slash

A ring blade similar to a chakram, though of a much larger size, despite it's size the Aiselne Drossel can be used to strike as a one handed weapon and can be used with weapon finesse, however the character must have their second hand free to properly wield as it must be caught after wide swings. The Aiselne Drossel can strike adjacent opponents, however when using it for a 10 foot reach it can only be use one handed and is done so at a -2 penalty. Typically the Aiselne Drossel is spun around the wrist or forearm when making attacks, and rested on ones shoulder when not in use. The blade of the ring is dull on the inside and sharp on the outside, allowing one to hold it and swing it around without injuring themselves.
Its name could be a mistranslation of "Eiserne Drossel", meaning "Iron Thrush" in German.

Interesting. I assume it's being treated as a 1-handed weapon with Weapon Finesse applicable?
Also, why the trip attempts? I don't remember Tira relying much on tripping...

I didn't include finesse-able though I will now that you pointed it out, and I'll go ahead and clear up that it is wielded 1 handed, as to trip attempts I felt it fit though if feedback suggest otherwise I will drop it.

What's with the range increment? 10 ft/20 thrown? Are you trying to say that they get 10 ft. reach and can throw it with a 20 ft. range increment? If it does give reach, mention if you can or cannot hit things adjacent to you. If you can, then this is more powerful than the spiked chain, already a very powerful weapon, so you probably want to either cut the reach or make it unable to hit adjacent.

That said, you need to say its handedness. Two-handed, it's a perfectly fine weapon, a falchion that can trip and be thrown. One-handed, it's way too powerful, as it's basically a bastard sword with the ability to be thrown and that can trip. From its size, it looks to be a two-handed weapon, so it should be fine.

Edit: You responded while I was typing, but I think my points still stand, and your weapon looks overpowered as is right now. Plus, no way you can swing that giant circle of metal around one handed, with finesse to boot. You'd definitely need to muscle it around with one hand. Two-handed, finesse I could see.

A 1d8 18-20/x2 finesse weapon is balanced as an exotic 1Her. You could probably toss in throwable or tripping, but not really both. (And by the look of it, throwing makes a lot more sense.) Certainly there's no call to make you immune to countertripping. (I'm assuming it doesn't have reach... that would also be too much.)

I'll ditch tripping, the reason I made it a reach weapon is because in the game it's from Tira has about the same reach as the large characters such as Astaroth or Nightmare.

while her stance holds it with both hands Tira does in fact strike with only one hand, what i might do is require the character to have his second hand free despite it being a one handed weapon.

The only character who could be said to have a reach weapon in Soul Calibur is Ivy*. Everyone else fits within the generous abstraction of the D&D combat grid.

I think you should ditch the reach. If she can hit people further away then it looks like she could, then that is a product of her training. There are feats and maneuvers which allow you to do such. For example, Lunging Strike from PHBII and Dancing Blade Form from Tome Of Battle.

Follow this link for more information on how the Tome Of Battle can change your perceptions of Soul Calibur. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=885568)

*The kusari-gama can be found in the Dungeon Master's Guide, on page 145. It is an exotic light reach weapon which can attack adjacent foes, can trip, and grants a +2 on disarm checks. 1d6 20/x2 piercing damage. Since it's light, it's finessable and can be used in a grapple. This is what Ivy wields. Same stats, it just looks like sword sometimes.

The only flaw I see to dropping the reach is it really wouldn't be worth an exotic weapon at that point, sure it can be thrown, but throw anything will allow you to throw it and anything else so it would better to take throw anything and simply use falcions.

Just a random thought, a dervish with one of these might be fun. :D

Not true. Compare the elven thinblade. Yours has the same stats, plus yours is throwable. (You should be comparing to a scimitar, not a falchion.)

If you want a 1H reach weapon, fair stats would be 1d8 19-20/x2 (for conventional reach), and no throwing.

However the elven thinblade is a weapon that isn't worth the exotic weapon. It doesn't do anything a martial weapon can't, and if it doesn't theres no reason to waste a feat on it.

As it stands this weapon can be thrown (disarming yourself) also throwing this weapon would mostly likely be a last ditch effort, I can't picture a bunch of characters carrying around a bunch of 16 pound throwing weapons.
Though it has reach, and you can strike with it one handed, you need your off hand free to wield.
It's finessable, but that's another feat you need to invest to take advantage of it.

Went ahead and (begrudgingly) changed the reach of the weapon, added a little bit to the descriptive text.

Quite honestly, I would put the reach back in it. The design of the weapon justifies it. Who said that weapons have to be balanced to one another? Who says one weapon can't clearly be better than almost all others? As I look through the equipment pages of the PHB, some weapons are undeniably better than others. The Greatsword, for example, does a LOT more damage than the Falchion, and IS CHEAPER. The only advantage the Falchion has is one more threat range. That really isn't that big of a deal considering the Greatsword does more damage every single hit, and still has an increased threat range.

If you were to change anything on this, I would leave the reach at 10ft. and decrease the threat range to 19-20/X2, but I wouldn't if you didn't want to.

I can think of a logical way of balancing this and being able to do everything you want it to do. State that this weapon is so large that it must be made out of adamentine in order to be usuable by anyone with a strength less than 20. Then it either has a huge prerequisite, or it has a huge cost.

I felt that way too, but after my first wave of feedback it appeared no one was willing to take it seriously with a 10 reach.

I fully agree with this, also when you throw exotic weapons in the mix not only are you already investing a feat, but the nature of exotic weapons means finding a better one may take awhile. This is why I feel most exotic weapons have potent abilities, to make up for the lack of magical abilities they will have.

If you were to change anything on this, I would leave the reach at 10ft. and decrease the threat range to 19-20/X2, but I wouldn't if you didn't want to.

I might consider that, I went for a higher crit range because most curved blades have a better crit range, but lowering 1 step wouldn't hurt.

I'm not sure about this, I can't say Tira is a very strong woman, also the villain I designed for my game wielding one of these is also a fairly small but quick assassin. Maybe putting a dexterity requirement on it.

By the way, I didn't mean Adamantine. I meant Mithral, but you probably guessed that.

Who is to say that Tira's isn't made from Mithral? Or your villian's? The idea is that this weapon would USUALLY be made out of Mithral (making it all that much more rare, too), but an exceptionally strong character COULD have one made out of steel, but that would be equally rare (If you had STR 20, would this really be your weapon of choice?).

True, that could be the case, I have to say with a 20 str I'd either go greatsword or great axe.

I did change it's write up, I put the character at a penalty when using it as a reach weapon. What do you think of it's current write up?

I like it. I think if I was to use it I would make it out of Mithral, but I really don't like Oriental campaigns, myself, so I doubt that I would ever use it. Too bad, too, because I really like this one. I think my current campaign will last until I switch over to 4th edition, too, so probably even more unlikely. That is assuming, of course, that I decide to switch.

You might be interested to learn that Tira is not oriental, heres her story Tira (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tira_%28Soul_Calibur%29) on wikipedia.

It suggest she is German (her name means not normal in German according to wiki), though spent most of her time in Europe.
