Is there such a thing in the D&D world? If there is, which book is it in? My DM had an NPC we werent supposed to be able to kill wearing it and we killed him. I got the mask, but I am not sure as to what it's abilities are. :help:

Could it simply be...

...a death mask made of alabaster?

I understand that, but he said it was supposed to have some special abilities. Could there have been a magic item that looked like an alabaster death mask.

Or perhaps the magical properties you speak of were added using the magic creation rules? As such, it could be anything.

Maybe this is what you're thinking of?

Mask of the Skull: This ivory mask has been fashioned into the likeness of a human skull. Once per day, after it has been worn for at least 1 hour, the mask can be loosed to fly from the wearer’s face. It travels up to 50 feet away from the wearer and attacks a target assigned to it. The grinning skull mask makes a touch attack against the target based on the wearer’s base attack bonus. If the attack succeeds, the target must make a DC 20 Fortitude save or be struck dead, as if affected by a finger of death spell. If the target succeeds on his saving throw, he nevertheless takes 3d6+13 points of damage. After attacking (whether successful or not), the mask flies back to its user. The mask has AC 16, 10 hit points, and hardness 6.

Strong necromancy and transmutation; CL 13th; Craft Wondrous Item, animate objects, finger of death, fly; Price 22,000 gp; Weight 3 lb.

I remeber something like this in Oriental Adventures, IIRC you put it on a dead body and it ressurects them, or something like that. He might just have put that item in vanilla because it was an interesting item. If i had the book i could be of more help.

Maybe I'm missing something, but why don't you just cast identify on the thing? That skips the guess work.

For that matter, it's time someone asked the inevitable question of why are you coming to the forums to try to get inside information that you shouldn't have?

the story goes that my DM was going to tell me because our sorcerer did cast identify, not to mention I did sit there for an hour (in game) studying it with my Detect Magic ability. He just couldn't remember what it was.
