are there rules for creating magic items that dont give enchantment bonus'. i have a scout and i want to add something to his movement but an enchantment bonus wont stack with his class speed ability since they are the same type. can i just substitute the bonus to competence bonus insted?

i was thinking of making a cloak of the leapard that added +10 movement and pounce against flat footed enemies.

the gm is pretty liberal so house ruling would probably be ok if needed.

thanks!!

This isn't allowed generally because it lowers the cost of the bonus. If allowed, you could get several +1 bonuses for less money than a +2 bonus.

In general, custom items are wholly down to the DM. But should be based of similar existing items.

With regards to pricing, something that uses a non standard bonus costs more that usual. In the case of skills (or movement @ a rate of +1ft = +1 skill pt), +25-50% would not be unreasonable.

For example, +resistance to saves are 1000g modifier, all other save bonus types are +2000g. +1 skill doesn't have as much impact on success in it's use as +1 save.

Similarly, +amour AC @ x1000g, +deflection AC @ x2000g, others @ x2500g.

@rinser - remember, the same bonus type (regardless of source), overlap, not stack. Though I believe circumstance from different sources*and untyped are the exceptions 1) a sensible DM would (metaphorically) slap you and 2) You'd have trouble convincing him to allow "go faster stripes" on anything other than shoes.

(* I might be wrong on this one)

I was referring to having these items:
+1 "my feet smell pretty" AC
+1 "I like dogs" AC
+1 "wizards are cool" AC
+1 "darn it is hot today" AC

+4 AC for the price of a legal legitimate +2 AC

ah, yes. But that would probably come under "sane DM slaps you".

(* I might be wrong on this one)Horrible horrible idea. Alternate bonuses types should NEVER exist.

Let's run some numbers:
I'll even go further than what was suggested, +100%, double price.

I'll buy some bracers of armor +4 for 16,000. Now I'll buy some bracers of your mother +4 for 32,000 (lets just say the 'mother' bonus is an insight bonus, not that common). I have now spent a total of 48,000 for a total of +8 to AC. Bracers of armor +8 cost 64,000. By buying the custom item, I have saved 16,000.

Let's make it even more riduculous. I'll but a ring of protection +5 for 50,000. Now I'll buy a ring of your mother +5 for 100,000. I have spent 150,000 for +10 to AC. A ring of protection +10 costs 1,000,000 (because any ring over +5 is epic and therefore the price gets *10). Now, by buying the custom item, I have saved 850,000.

Custom items that grant the same bonuses but with a different type should NEVER EVER EVER be allowed.

yeah, people seem to be missing the point, normal stacking rules apply. The DMG states these price differences for bonus types the DMG lists.
The DM is still free to say "no, that would be munchkin and unacceptable".

"yo momma" as an insight bonus, would overlap with "whoz ya daddy" also an insight bonus. Calling it "yo momma" doesn't change it from insight. The name of the item is just that. A NAME. The bonus type however, is important, but can be left to the items description.

A DM who freely allows unnamed bonus on custom item gets what he deserves.

Or perhaps your ring of protection should overlap with your armour's enhancement bonus?, How about that amulet of natural armour?

Notice how bracers of armour don't stack with your armour? That's right it's an armour bonus too.

+4 enhancement & +4 deflection on a breast plate is still a +8 on a piece of armour. The bonus' will stack with other sources (as appropriate), but on the one item, the bonus & thus cost stacks.

+4 Natural AC on, say an amulet,
+4 deflection AC on, say a ring,
+8 amour AC & +2 enhancement AC on say, a set of full plate +2.

Why, I do believe that's +18AC. But not the cost of a +18 item! Oh the humanity! /sarcasm.

Alternatively:

+4 yo momma (insight)
+4 whoz ya daddy (insight)

Gives +4. Why? Check the types. Both insight. But it costs twice a single +4 item.

Just out of curiosity. How do you plan on wearing & gaining the benefits 2 sets of bracers? I don't recall even mentioning that the rules on magic items & body slots got suspended for no reason.

Sorry, had a really bad day.

the idea behind the cloack was that imparted part of the cats powers into the wearer. fortunately our group isnt as munchkiny as the most of the users on this board. we had no plans to create huge piles of item to break the game and save destroy dnds fictional economy. this was one item that would help with more movement and have some really cool flavor for this character since he's a stalking predator too.

that said, is there any item that gives a movement bonus that would stack with the scouts or would it be simpler to house rule that the scouts bonus should be untyped like the barbarians. the scout is a non magical character, why does he have an enhancement bonus to movement. if anything that should be the competence bonus.
