I was wondering what people thought about including spears as a double weapon, as there isn't much difference between a spear and a quarter staff.

The quarter staff and spear can easily be used as a trip weapon as well (leg sweeps and such)....perhaps that should be added to it's properties.
To Balance it tripping you could require it be a exotic weapon feat.

By the same token you could have a short glaive, which would be similar but do blunt and slashing.

I realize both my suggestions mimic the Gnomish Hooked Hammer and the Dwarven Urgrosh, but I have some trouble imagining my Fighter using any of the double weapons listed, as listed the seem unwieldy and contrived. Whereas some of the standard weapons could be used as double weapons without making them into some kind of racial weapon.

Thoughs?

I think it'd be just fine - with a feat cost attached. Someone proficient in both staff and spear might be able to attack with the pole of the spear like a staff, but he probably wouldn't be able to stab with it like the spear simultaneously with any efficiency. The same feat, rather than being like an EWP, could let you do so with any pole-arm.

If you're creating feats anyway, you might as well allow Dragon Magazine feats, right?

Dragon #30 had a feat called Spear Master that let you use spears and shortspears as double weapons whose back end did bludgeoning damage equal to the front end.

Dragon #331 had a whole special on polearm feats, including Haft Strike which let you make an offhand attack with the butt of ANY polearm (and the magazine has a list of what counts) as if it were a club, and unlike other double weapons, it doesn't seem to specify that you enchant both ends separately.

Check them out at crystalkeep to see if its what you want.

Thanks, it will be much better then reinventing the wheel.

I may try that as it will come in handy when i'm attacked at two sides
