Alternate Grapple rules? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I love the idea of Grappling in D&D--being able to jump on a guy and wrestle him to the ground rather than hacking at him with a sword. And (theoretically) I love the idea of having a different kind of mechanic that you can use to fight someone (if just for variety).

But, like many other people, I always have to look up the rules on Grapple. I know the basics of them, but I have to look stuff up anyway. The rules are complicated and badly written.

So... does anyone have suggestions for alternate Grappling systems? Either that work better and/or that are easier to use?

Either that work better (you can do actual damage to people instead of just 1d3), and/or that are easier to use?

1d3 is actual damage. To the average Commoner, that's almost life-threatening.

If you're talking to monsters, that's what spells, magic weapons, and class abilities are for. And then there's the Reaping Mauler prestige class, get pinned for a few rounds and you die. ;)

True, but it might be nice to have a system where you don't need a Prestige Class in order to strangle a warrior of any significant level.

You can ignore the damage comment if you'd like. That's my personal preference getting in the way of a serious request for a better grappling system.

That 1d3 can be a lot if you add +10 STR for example.
A level 20 half orc barbarian (20 base str) has +8 str when rages and does 4 attacks.... that's 4d3+20 damage. Also he will have a lot of stuff to up his STR.
A monk 20 will do much better.

But the characters that really benefit from grapple are big ones (eg: half-ogres), druids (bears!!! Improved grapple is the killer), and monks (especially if also big).

See my thread in this forum (monk+druid+grapple=OMFG!?) to see how grapple can get crazy already at ECL9-10. No PrC.
