Inspired by the "Fighting Withdrawal" thread . . .

In reading those posts it got me to thinking about an alternate version of the Withdraw full-round action.
I would like to know if what I propose is balanced ?

(Changes in the text are in bold)

Withdraw
Withdrawing from melee combat is a full-round action. When you withdraw, you can move up to your speed. Any square you move out of during your withdraw move is not considered threatened by any opponent you can see, and therefore visible enemies do not get attacks of opportunity against you when you move from those squares. (Invisible enemies still get attacks of opportunity against you, and you can’t withdraw from combat if you’re blinded.) You can’t take a 5-foot step during the same round in which you withdraw.
You may not withdraw using a form of movement for which you don’t have a listed speed.
Note that despite the name of this action, you don’t actually have to leave combat entirely.
If you are limited to taking only a standard action each round you cannot take the withdraw action.

The trade-off is that you are giving up moving double your speed to gain immunity from any AoOs due to moving out of a threatened square during your withdrawal, which is only up to your speed.

this might be balanced if it was a feat with dodge and mobility as prequisites
it seems a little overpowered right now i mean who wouldnt like to be immune to AoO
AoO are hard to get already this kind of withdraw would eliminate even more opportunities for AoO

as a feat balanced
as a variant not so much

Thanx Sirius.

I was hoping for some more interest and get multiple opinions on this proposed change . . .

I like the feat, but do agree this definitely needs Mobility et. al. as pre-reqs.

Yes, it does hurt the AoO person a bit more, but Tumbling as written, already does that, and with Mobility as a pre-req they are 90% of the way to Spring Attack anyway.

I might even allow it as a Special Action doable as a Standard action but only moving you 1/2 your normal speed if you are restricted to just a Standard Action.

Making it a feat is an option, but not what I was considering.

I wanted opinions on whether the the trade-off of giving up moving double your speed during withdrawal to gain immunity from any AoOs due to moving out of a threatened square during your withdrawal (which is only up to your speed) is balanced.

As it is it seems too powerful to me. However, if rather than eliminating the AoO's you just added something like an AC bonus of +2 or +4 against the AoO's then it would seem to be better balanced.

I wanted opinions on whether the the trade-off of giving up moving double your speed during withdrawal to gain immunity from any AoOs due to moving out of a threatened square during your withdrawal (which is only up to your speed) is balanced. Well, you've got 3 takers so far, all of whom suggest that it is not. I won't bore you with more unsolicited ideas for how to make it moreso since, unless I've misjudged your tone, you don't seem terribly interested in hearing them. Maybe that's not entirely fair of me - only 2 of them had been posted as of your last item... At any rate, count me in as the fourth, I guess, and I'll just leave it at that.

That is what I was looking for......positive or negative criticism on whether it is balanced.

Making it a feat is a good suggestion, just not what I was looking for. I know a feat can be made to alter the Withdraw action, but it's the Withdraw action I don't like to begin with.

And the consensus is that this rule alteration would be unbalanced.

Thanx to all.
