Am I crazy or does it reach? [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-13-04, 07:14 AM So I am building a character concept, and I am wondering about the effect his weapon will have on the game. It goes something like this: A psionic half-giant with the powerful build racial feature, taking monkey grip, and weilding a greatsword. Just to make him larger, I might try to breed him with a centaur or something of that nature (but that is neigther here nor there).

My guess is that a fullblade is about 54 inches long. Now if you increase that 2 size categories, it is a 121.5 inch sword. This means it is roughly 10 feet. If I manage to make him larger (racially), then the sword will be approximately 182 inches (15 feet). Now if my character is weilding a 15-foot sword does it seem like he should have a 15-foot reach? Or if you get hung up on the racial breeding thing, how about a 10-foot weapon? Should that get reach? If the weapon has reach does that mean I can't hit stuff that is closer?

12-13-04, 07:34 AM Mostly right. A large creature with a greatsword has 10' reach, a huge one 15'. Look at frost giants.

12-13-04, 07:52 AM You misunderstand, the first set of stats (10 foot sword) is a medium creature. The second set is a large creature (long). Both creatures have a 5-foot reach, but 10 and 15 foot weapons respectively.

Monkey Grip doesn't stack with Powerful Build. Both let you wield a weapon one size bigger than you are. If you're Medium, like half-giants are, then both abilities let you wield Large weapons. Being able to wield a Large weapon for two different reasons doesn't mean you can wield Huge ones.

Clearly, it's not the weapon length providing 10' of extra reach to the Ogre; the Centaur uses the same weapon and only gets 5'.

If you read the text of Powerful build, it states it does stack.

A fullblade would be longer than that. The size you mention is only 4 1/2 feet. Most greatswords are that long or longer. A fullblade would be, at the very least, 6 feet, if not 7 or 8.

Not to mention I have no idea what size rules you're using. Size categories double each time. If something is Medium, and 54 inches long, then the Huge version would be 216 inches long.

Although it does say I believe in the DMG that size increases double weapon size there are more references that make more sense that say it increases size by 50%. I used this logic to calculate the size of a greatsword (36 inches)

The Arms and equipment guid says that most of the time, weapons that have reach do not get it when increasing in size. But how about when they increase 3-4 sizes? But I'm just seeing what people have to say.
