I was wondering if anyone knew if this item have been changed lately? It seems odd to me that you could have a huge scorpion at the same price as a large spider... I can only assume it was meant to be a large scorpion too.

Thanks

It was errataed. Check the Magic Item Compendium Errata:

Page 68 – Amber Amulet of Vermin
(table) [Substitution]
The scorpion size is incorrect. The Vermin entry on
line five should read: “Large monstrous scorpion.”

Thanks, that made a whole lot more sense. Anyway, this item is invaluable to my 1st level drow warblade :)

There is another point worth making on the Amber Amulets of Vermin - the cost for their ability does not make sense, being way too low. The original source of these items was Magic of Faerun, where Amber Amulets of Vermin have the correct table (including Large vs. Huge Scorpions), and the same gp values as the Magic Item Compendium. However, the Magic of Faerun versions were effectively one-shot items (like potions or scrolls) whereas the Magic Item Compendium describes them as being 1/day items. Huge difference.

Now I know that Magic Item Compendium states that they changed some items for interest/gameplay/balance issues, and that the version in that book is correct. However, this seems an extreme unbalancing change likely due to a forgotten line in the entry. As always, your DM should rule according to whatever fits your game best.

That is indeed a huge difference, but not one I see as "broken". Its more in the cathegory of very useful items, along with ring of the darkhidden (DotU) and healing belt (MiC), which I will also try to get ahold of.

I am going to try the near impossible; play solo as a drow. As one can imagine, any trick is a good trick (as long as its not blantantly un-cool)
