Amber Amulet of Vermin [Archive] - Wizards Community

I tried looking around the web and the offical wizard forums but I cannot seem to find any information about this item that was revised in MIC. The amulet lets you summon an insect as if through the summon natures ally spell, it last for 1 minute, and acts immediatly after summoned. The problem is that for 1,200gp you can get an amulet that summons a giant stag beetle (CR4) and it states that the amulet is usable 1/day...

This seems like an insanly uber item as we found out last night after randomly getting one of these. We summoned it into a group of guys and with it's 52 hitpoints and 4d6+9 damage it tore through them all like a hot knife through butter.

My question is, was the 1/day a huge typo? From what I understand the amber amulet originally came from magic of faerun and it was usable once (then it was destroyed).

Any help, thoughts or clarifications would be great.

Stick with the once ever as listed in the old book.

05-31-07, 01:29 PM I dont think of it as an error. the amulet is on the 4th level of random loot table, so a party that gets one should be 4th level themselves.

Yes it has a nice attack, and if at level 4 your fighting a group of level 1-2 monsters of couse its going to be effective. In addition its large size so there could be size issues in various places when you summon it. Futhermore it has a base speed of 20, meaning most things can outrun it.

Keep in mind that you got the most powerful amber amulet. If you managed to get the giant bee, even at an smaller level, it wouldent be a big factor.

If you were to compare it to a scroll, the best amber amulet at 1,200gp would be 50gp cheaper then a summon monster V scroll at caster level 10... How could something that conjures a CR4 creature (which is better then the monster for summon monster V) and is usable once per day be even remotely balanced? Any can use the amber amulet at any level, where a summon monster V scroll has to be on your list and you need to make caster level checks.
