Does anyone know offhand if there are any items in MIC that allow you to cast or have an effect of antimagic field? I have a grappler that wants his victims to stay put.

I know in Underdark there is an Antimagic Torc but I don't know if I'm going to be able to use Underdark, and Antimagic Shackles out of BoED is just too expensive.

Thanks in advance.

Ring of Spell Storing & have a spellcaster cast AMF into it.

Right out of the PHB & DMG.

Expensive... but core.

I'm needing items that are affordable to a lvl 14 character.

Well, custom-made permanent Antimagic Field item : 6*11*2000gp = 132.000 gp ; add 50% for the 10 min/level duration, and you're at 198.000 gp. Have your DM accept this, as well as a class or alignment restriction on its use to reduce it by 30%, down to 138.600 gp. This leaves you 11.400 gp for the rest of your equipment.

Off course, since it's a custom object, your DM might decide to increase (or decrease) the cost, or to disallow it entirely.

I take issue with custom-built magic items with class/alignment restrictions to reduce the price.

Reason being, you're not actually limiting your use of it in any way. Since you're making it for yourself, you intend to get 100% usefulness out of it.

Magic items should be priced to power - and since you're able to utilize all of that power, you should have to pay the full price.

I would only use those restrictions to reduce price for drops from enemies when it actually restricts who and what can use an item in the party - not for custom-built items.

Not only is Dalthbar correct, but if you make the item available to NON-spell casters it should cost even MORE.

Specifically, part of the balancing of the spell AMF is that you have to be a pretty high level CASTER to cast it, and it must be ON YOU. So by casting it you are seriously weakening yourself.

Luckily there are other spells called Anti-Magic AURA, which is identical to AMF except that it is 7th level and can be cast on other people.

If you want a permanent item of anti-magic that can be worn and used by someone that is not a high level caster, then the item should be based on the 7th level spell, not the 6th level spell

Specifically, the price start out being:

7*13*2000 gp = 182,000 gp.

That is a fair price to let your fighter totally own the spell casting creatures he faces.

As for a 30% price reduction? You better be making it do something that actually LIMITS your use of the item if you expect to pay less to make that thing.

Dalthbard : that's why I said it's up to the DM. By RAW, that's what is ruled.

Tarkin : that's part of the ad-hoc pricing by the DM. A sort of house-rule, in fact.

I'm aware of the RAW, but I think it's an important point to bring up since

A) the pricing rules are just guidelines
B) most people don't look at the rules objectively - especially the magic item pricing rules

Even a well-intentioned DM may be fooled by magic item pricing - let alone a player with devious intentions trying to abuse the rules.
