| Flandrake09-05-04, 02:30 AM | A few days ago I was playing D&D with some of my friends. This was a quick game to test out one person as a DM. I went for Ranger (archer) and a friend of mine was a Paladin who used a bow. We also had a fighter and a cleirc but that doesn't matter. Anyways, when the combat was nearing its end I said something about running low on arrows and the Paladin said, "I still have 108." *laugh* This made me think for a moment. How the hell could a character carry that many arrows. A quiver is 20 arrows and I suppose you could buy bigger ones if the DMed allowed it but having 120 arrows at first level is stupid IMO. It makes no sense and isn't realistic to roleplaying. I'm starting a new campaign in a few days with the same person who played the Paladin. I told him that he had a limit on the number of arrows he had and he got mad. He is still gonna play (though now he switched to a sword user) but I just wanted to find out what everyone else thought of this arrows business. |

That being said, I agree that carrying that many arrows on your person is ludacris. The easy way to deal with that is to simply ask him exactly where on his body he's stowing all these quivers. If most of them are in his pack, fine, but he can't get to them as a free action there. If he's carrying them all on his person by strapping them to random places on his body, make sure to apply circumstance penalties to some of his skill checks, like Tumble and possibly Climb. |

Until you find some magic items, I would say the most arrows you could have without penalties to movement is about 40, if that many at all. Besides, you don't need that many arrows for a day's worth of battles. Even on longer trips, three quivers is all you'll need... |
| Darkwin609-05-04, 11:16 AM | 20 arrows = 3 lb. 100 arrows = 15 lb. The carrying capacity is the limit. In a game where someone can take tens of arrows and not die you shouldn't restrict how many he can carry anymore than this. Of course they won't all be ready to draw and fire. Even on longer trips, three quivers is all you'll need... Ha ha ha. Check out some of the archer builds. |
| Kheldren09-05-04, 11:20 AM | I have to agree - get him to state how many are in direct access quivers (one or 2 quivers only I would think - best 1) and let him refilll the quiver from his pack between encounters. Then he only has to worry about shooting out all 20 in a single encounter which is not that likely at low level, but is very possible. No was can you justify setting a hard limit on what he can take unless you re-work all the encumberance rules. |
| XMasterX09-05-04, 11:25 AM | i, loving to play b&a focused characters usually only carry 20 arrows unless, as someone said already i think, if is is going to be a long adventure, not seeing a shop in a while, ill take proportionatly more |
| psionichamster09-05-04, 12:00 PM | theoretically, one could carry as many arrows as their strength would allow. however, that would be silly, as each quiver holds 20 (and thats a big quiver for 3'long, fletched battle arrows)... realistically, 1 on the back and possibly one opposite the draw hand side of the body (left hip for us righties, right shoulder for the back mount)...but that means no scabbard on that side... so there are tradeoffs everywhere... carrying 100 + arrows aint hard...just bundle them up like sticks...but carrying 5 quivers full (without magical help) is just plain silly the hamster |
| Kalanth09-05-04, 12:38 PM | The limit is ther persons encumbrance, combined with their imaginations. If I want that many arrows, I would go to a smithy (or had taken crafting skills) and designed special quivers that attach to my armor. Strap some to my legs, some to my arms, two on my back, you get the picture. I think it is reasonable to create a slightly larger quiver, allowing you to hold 40 in its pouch. in essence, just with four quivers you have 80 arrows, and if you add two small ones of ten each to your arms you get 100. Oh sure, your gonna look pretty dumb, and maybe had a reduced movement based on the design of the armor, but you get those 100 arrows. |
