| CrazyCloud12-21-06, 03:16 PM | My friend told me that an Amulet of Anti-Life shell was the one of the best things a charger could want since it prevented most melee sneak attacks on you and always made sure that you had 10 feet of space between you and your opponent so that you could effectively charge. Is this a viable item for a melee charger? |
| Thomas_Covenant12-21-06, 03:38 PM | Hmm...continuous Anti-Life Shell.... 6th level spell, 11th level caster, X1.5 for 10 min/level duration, 2,000 base for continuous. 6X11X1.5X2,000 = 198,000 gps, as a guideline. Which is honestly about where I'd leave it, it's a very potent 6th level spell, used correctly. A charger would certainly want it, but so would anyone. Party members couldn't come close, which could be awkward if he's bleeding to death.... Extremely powerful item, rightly priced out of use by most character pre-Epic. |
| Nom12-21-06, 04:42 PM | "Forcing an abjuration barrier against creatures that the spell keeps at bay collapses the barrier." So it's essentially a one-shot. it prevents living creatures from approaching you, but as soon as you even try to approach them it drops (and stays dropped for everyone). |

The point is you get to charge first, as no one can get close enough to you to prevent it. For a serious Uber-Charge build, this may be worth 200k, as you enter Epic. |
| tarkin12-21-06, 06:04 PM | That is not an item the charger wants. Instead it is the item the ranged attacker wants. Archers, reach weapons, mages. Those are the people that want to keep their opponents at bay. It is not worth the price for just a one shot thing each battle. |
| Thomas_Covenant12-21-06, 06:08 PM | Instead it is the item the ranged attacker wants. Archers, reach weapons, mages.Oh, no question, this is major power trick for the Cleric Archer. (Of which they have dozens, but it's still a good one.) He asked if it would be good for a charger. Sure, it would, too expensive pre-Epic, and for good reason. He won't get it.....but that doesn't make it any less desirable. |
| Tyrf_Halden12-21-06, 06:31 PM | Why bother with getting it crafted? Get your hands on either a scroll of wish or pay a mage to use Wish (the scroll would cost 28,825 gp ang to get a mage to cast it for you I can't find the cost for that). Since: A wish can produce any one of the following effects. * Duplicate any wizard or sorcerer spell of 8th level or lower, provided the spell is not of a school prohibited to you. * Duplicate any other spell of 6th level or lower, provided the spell is not of a school prohibited to you. * Duplicate any wizard or sorcerer spell of 7th level or lower even if it’s of a prohibited school. * Duplicate any other spell of 5th level or lower even if it’s of a prohibited school. * Undo the harmful effects of many other spells, such as geas/quest or insanity. * Create a nonmagical item of up to 25,000 gp in value. * Create a magic item, or add to the powers of an existing magic item. So I guess you could slip it past your DM and moderately abuse Wish. But that's given if your Dm would let you... |
| Nom12-21-06, 09:46 PM | Right, but as a continuous item, you can reset it as a standard action. So, while in the middle of melee, you're going to take a standard action to reset said item, which won't help anyway because your assailants are already within 10 ft.? |
| CrazyCloud12-21-06, 10:09 PM | Maybe a Spring Attacker may find more use for it. And to tell you the truth, I'm considering it now since I have an epic charger and money generally isn't an issue for pre-epic items (epic items on the other hand eeegh....) |
| Thomas_Covenant12-21-06, 10:31 PM | So, while in the middle of melee, you're going to take a standard action to reset said item, which won't help anyway because your assailants are already within 10 ft.?No, if you're a "charger" worthy of the name, you should kill whatever you charged, especially at Epic border or beyond. Some Chargers use Tumble, Tumble out as move, reset as standard. Realisticly, if this tactic is seriously working at 20+, your DM has issues. Epic monsters who stay on the ground, and don't have powerful tricks besides melee, probably shouldn't exist. Even those will have SR, so they might punch through anyway. |
| DM Zoc12-22-06, 12:47 AM | Could you also use a spear or some such to prevent breaking the barrier against the enemy (since the charge would end as you're still 10+ feet away)? |
