Amulet of Silence - price? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Our party has recently taken proprietorship over a shop, and for security, we've hired on an ogre guard. He sleeps on the premises, but he snores like a chainsaw -- actually, seven or eight chainsaws. Our artificer wants to make an item to fix this, but we don't know what it would cost. It would be something along the lines of:

Amulet of Silence
Price: ??
Body Slot: Throat
Caster Level: 3rd
Aura: Faint; (DC 17) illusion
Activation: --
Weight: 1 lb.

The wearer of this amulet is rendered silent as if affected by a silence spell and cannot produce any sound from his person. Incoming sound is heavily muffled, and the wearer also takes a -5 circumstance penalty on Listen checks. The silence does not extend beyond the wearer's body -- he can create sound through non-personal means, such as banging two objects together, and his equipment is not silenced in any way. If the wearer succeeds on a DC 13 Will save, he can speak normally for one round (this also removes the Listen penalty).

Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, silence
Cost to create: ??

Any thoughts for how much this object would run? A continuous silence item would, by the fabled table, run 24,000 gp, but this is much smaller in scope (and I don't think that price is satisfactory anyway). I don't want this to be a cursed item so it can be removed normally, but is there any other way to pull this off?

Not sure about the price. If this is meant to hinder whoever is wearing it, why would you want it to be able to be taken off so easily? Wouldn't you want it to be cursed somehow, maybe it can only be removed after a remove curse?

Such an item is of course free.

The thieves guild will give one to you.

If you are 'smart' enough to put it on your guard, preventing him from hearing the bad guys break in, you have made a good deal.

By the way, I have a bridge to sell you. Hardly used. Real cheap.

What you really want is Sculpt Sound. That way you can change the sound your guard makes when he sleeps and still be able to hear what's going on around you.

Necklace of Sonic Sculpting
Price: 8640gp
Body Slot: Throat
Caster Level: 8th
Aura: Weak (DC 16) Transmutation
Activation: Command Word
Weight: -

Description: Can cast "Sculpt Sound" once (1) per day, the effect lasts 8 hours.

Prerequisites: Craft Wonderous Item, Sculpt Sound

Cost to Create: 4320gp, 346 XP, 9 days

On the other hand you could probably hire a bard to visit and cast the spell for you. It would probably cost you 40gp/day + travel expenses

Wow, I'm actually offended that you think we're that stupid.

The ogre is our night watch. He sleeps during the day, when we would prefer to have people patronizing our establishment, but people are less than keen on shopping with you when a snoring ogre is making the building tremble. If he was sleeping when he was supposed to be guarding, we would hardly keep him employed.

The 1/day sculpt sound item is a thought, and probably a better baseline than silence. My problem with it is the use of the table at all. I would really prefer to price this item on what it's actually "worth," much like bracers of armor aren't priced based on mage armor. What would you actually pay for such an item, assuming you had use for one?

I'd price it at about 500gp for an item that makes it so you can't speak or hear sounds well, but is easily removable. It isn't going to be used to sneak around, since you still make that sort of noise... and just make it so that it prevents the wearer from casting spells with a verbal component. I can't think of any other abuses to this rather narrowly focused item.

It is a rather strange scenario... most campaigns don't have players setting up shop, let alone having to deal with all the mundane details related to operating a shop on a daily basis.
