Well, I believe the DMG says the the rift will be open at a 30 or 40ft. radius, immeadiatly sucking them all in and be lost forever in the astral plane. Now, if one could rig up an arrow, that contained both the portable hole and bag of holding, and on impact, cause the two to to be put together, you could open a rift, right on your enemy! Now, of course, you would have to stand clear of the radius, so you don't get sucked in, but all your enemies will! Tell me, woudl this work? |

| Despana02-21-06, 08:08 AM | The rift is 10' radius, but anywho. So, you want an arrow that will: A: be able to carry a minimum of 15lbs + a (admittedly negligible weight) square of cloth B: be able to manipulate said items to open the bag and insert the cloth C: still be able to be fired by a normal bow (as opposed to say a ballista or such) My vote: not possible, YDMMV. |
| draconic_swine02-21-06, 08:24 AM | I'd say the best way to achieve this effect would be to just create a new magic enhancement that opens a 10-foot rift into the Astral Plane. No need for odd-looking arrows, and it'll cost a helluva lot less to enchant 50 arrows than to buy 50 bags of holding and 50 portable holes. |
| YabaTheWhat02-21-06, 08:26 AM | Doesn't the haversack count as three miniature bags of holding? It's only 5 lbs, and has less capacity all around than a bag of holding, but it still functions the same way. So what's to stop someone from making a 1 lb bag of holding with just enough capacity to fit a portable hole? The arrow could be a hollow tube, with the bag at one end and the hole at the other. (Whichever one needs to fit into the other would be at the back end, loosely secured, and the other item would be held open at the front end of the arrow.) The arrow would be really expensive (cost = portable hole plus haversack plus masterwork arrow). It would need a separator disc (like a safety catch on a gun) to avoid being set off any time the PC got knocked down, blown up, etc. This might work better as a crossbow bolt than as an arrow. Loading and firing the arrow/bolt would be a two-handed full-round action in either case (because you'd need to pull the safety just before firing). |
| ScipioX02-21-06, 11:03 AM | A: attaching a bunch of stuff to an arrow usually means it will fall to the ground about 10 feet away from the bow. B: using a very small portable hole and bag of holding will probably result in a very small rift. |
| tarkin02-21-06, 11:41 AM | I see no reason to make it an arrow, the items are heavy. Moreover, they are expensive (20,000 gp for Portable Hole) Instead make it a throwable magic item. The Javelin seems appropriate: Javelin of the Rift This javelin has been specially enchanted. When it is thrown, if a hit is made, it breaks open a rift to the Astral Plane. All within 10ft are sucked into it, exactly as if a portable hole was placed within a bag of holding (Javelin is destroyed.) Moderate conjuration; CL 12th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, secret chest, plane shift; Price 22,800 gp. |
