He could then ride in my backpack and throw things at people when I tell him too. Because he's smart now I dont have to spend the skill points or move action to command him. I can just speak to him as a free action to tell him what to throw. With this I can get one free thrown item every round that doesnt cost me an action. A free tanglefoot bag every round would be nice. |

| jaelis08-22-07, 11:10 AM | What you're describing sounds like a cohort. An intelligent monkey would make a reasonable cohort, but you'd need to take the Leadership feat. |
| tarkin08-22-07, 11:13 AM | Yeah, and his BAB would be low. That does matter, even with grenade like weapons. What you have here is a hireling that is small and you HOPE will be cheap. But considering you are sending him into a dangerous situation (one fireball will KILL him, even if he makes his save), I would instead expect a fair payment to be LARGE and required upfront. Worse, as you are carrying him, you are unlikely to want him to buy things, as you have to carry that too. Of course, being a silly monkey, you MIGHT be able to trick him into takeing a small sallary. But I expect this idea is more trouble than it is worth. I think a better idea would be giving it to your HORSE. You are already going to ride him, and he will probably be able to buy some nice armor, and some additional magic items to help him out. As he is carrying everyuthing, the weight is not a problem. He can get some nice items to keep him alive, such as something that boosts his Saveing throws. |

From SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/typesSubtypes.htm#animalType) Traits An animal possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry). Intelligence score of 1 or 2 (no creature with an Intelligence score of 3 or higher can be an animal). There are two schools of thought here. One says that an animal can never, unless when using spells like awaken animal or something, gain an int of higher than 2. Some say that as soon as an animal gains an int higher than 2, it becomes a magical beast (augmented animal). So anything working on a beast or animal would work on it. I am part of the first school because than something as simple as a int buff spell or a +2 headband of intellect will be the same as a lvl 5 druid only spell! The headband which doesnt cost much money is even better than a Awaken spell with permenancy on it, because it cant be dispelled. Sounds balanced to you? it doesnt to me... |
| tarkin08-22-07, 11:28 AM | I don't think changing type is that big a deal. It is not a permanent change, and we are not claiming it does anything else (such as give it other abilities that a Magical Beast has). |
| mvincent08-22-07, 04:01 PM | You might have to make a Diplomacy Check to get it (the Monkey) to do anything.Just treat him as a hireling (and pay him in bananas). |

Sounds balanced to you? it doesnt to me... Awaken doesn't need permanency, it's instantaneous. Therefore, it's all ready permanent, and not subject to dispells, because insantaneous spells arent. |

The Awaken spell cannot be used with permanency, nor can it be dispelled. It is an instatneous effect. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/awaken.htm It also adds hit dice and charisma as well as not needing a character slot making it quite a bit better than a headband of intellect. |
