I'm running a campaign in which a character (barbarian) has a 20 strength and he wants to know what the heaviest and largest sword is. He wants that to be his trademark. I told him if he can find one from any of the source books he can use it provided it doesnt break any rules. So he asked me to post this to see if any of you know of any large swords. Also he wants to know if there are rules for heavy swords like there are for mighty bows (needing a certain strength mod to pull it back/lift sword).

Well if he's big enough he can use a fullblade but its a Huge sized weapon so he has to be large to weild it there might be other feats that an let him use it but idk what they are. I think the greatsword is the biggest sword that a medium sized person can use. If you want to I guess you can make a merciual greatsword but people might not like that to much.

Monkey Grip a Large greatsword. Or, get Monkey Grip and EWP (Bastard Sword).

EDIT: The Monkey Grip feat's in Complete Warrior.

If he wants a sword, he wants a Mercurial Greatsword... technically 3.0, but doesn't clash with 3.5 rules. It's from one of the monk books... which I don't have anymore.... but I do BELIEVE it's 2d8 (not sure, about the same damage as a full blade) damage with a x4 crit modifier (like a scyth or pick)... Reason it's so high is the blade is VERY big, and thicker than normal, but it's hollow with a liquid inside... when you swing, the liquid goes to the end of the sword, increasing it's mass, thus increasing damage potential.

With that much str, he definitely wants a 2H weapon since he can take advantage of his 1.5x strength modifier from using it 2H (so he'll get a +15 damage from his strength alone). If I were him, I'd actually go with a falcion... 2H and it starts out with a 18-20 crit range.

OooooOoOoOr, if he wants to give up a little function for style... (therefore allowing you to fudge a little, without going overboard) I would give him a mix between a mourning star and that big arse hammer in the equipment section (I don't wanna look right now).... Same stats as the normal hammer, but give it one big ol' spike on each side and make it piercing/bludgeoning and maybe increase the thread modifier to x3 since it'll have pick type points hanging out all over the place. (or... if you can find a picture, look for the weapon "Rock" uses from "Soul Calibur III" that's kinda like what I was discribing.)

Ok there has been a few mistakes made so far. Fullblades are now a large weapon in 3.5 and the Mercurial Greatsword has been fixed in the newer printings of E&AG it now does 2d6 with a X4 crit.

My suggestion is to either give him Monkey grip and EWP Mercurial Greatsword and hand him a large MGS which would be 3d6 with X4 crit 1200 gp and would wieght 34lbs all of this would come with a -2 penalty to attack. Or you could give him a Fullblade with the EWP Fullblade this would give 2d8 damage crit 19-20/X2 weight 23lbs and a cost of 100 gp with this build it only takes one feat and you get no penalty to attack. Becareful though becuase a Fullblade is a very argued weapon. I personally hope they reprint it soon in a 3.5 book.

While not technically a sword, the biggest weapon I can think of is the Sugglin (sp?) from Frostburn. It takes two feats just to swing the thing properly :D

I dont mean to dog your barbarian friend out at all....... BUT

The beauty behing D&D is originality. How many warrior classes have used 'the biggest sword they can find' as their trademark? I mean come on. If I was a Great Wyrm I would get sick of swords piling up in my hoard from all of the brainless thugs that come running. Personally i would find it much more frightening if some crazed half-naked, half-orc came running at me with a weapon that i wouldnt expect.

dont get me wrong swords are fine.... they are just played up and overused. Especially if you plan on one being your 'trademark'

You are all mentioning Monkey Grip with 2-handed weapons. I actually don't believe that the feat will do anything with 2-handed weapons. It just allows you to wild large weapons in 1 hand, not using bigger weapons in 2 hands. But maybe I just got it wrong. :)

I believe Platinum weapons from (Magic of Faerun?) have a lot of weight to them.

If he just wanted size (over weight) he could monkey grip a gargantuan Sun-blade.

BTW, I couldn't find a picture of Rock's weapon, so I found another one that works....

see if this link works:

It's a screenshot I took from Guild wars.... a dwarf holding a pretty decent sized hammer with spikes coming out all over the place... give it whatever stats you want, but it sounds like this is the type of weapon your player may be interested.... Doesn't sound like he's asking for an uber1337 munchkin weapon or nothing... just something visually impressive for RP purposes.
