| ReverseCausality10-13-06, 01:07 PM | Reading over the body slot affinities, it says that amulets are for discernment while bracers are for combat. Therefore, since Amulets would be at an inappropriate slot, and amulets cost 6x^2, wouldn't bracers of mighty fists cost 4x^2? Has anyone looked into this and made a ruling? |
| Someone10-13-06, 01:15 PM | Its because not all creatures have forearms attached to their natural weapons. And I would think gloves/gauntlets would make more sense than bracers. "boxing gloves of the bison" sounds like a great item name, even if it makes no logical sense. |
| Tony Vargas10-13-06, 02:00 PM | You're right about the slot affinities, but those affinities are guidelines for the DM, and the items in the DMG don't always follow them. It may be that the amulet has 'paid' for the inapropriate affinity, just as you suggest (and, honestly, I think that's pretty reasonable). But, it might have been allowed to slide on it, instead - in which case bracers or gauntlets would cost the same as the amulet, and a 'Hat of Mighty Fists' or other inapropriate slot would cost half-again as much. |

The Rules of the Game section on that item says exactly what you posted here. The amulet of Mighty Fists includes in it's price the 1.5 for slot affinity. |
| Xeviat-DM10-13-06, 03:31 PM | Got a link Risner? A monk player would really appreciate having their price reduced to just double the magic item price (since flurry is really just a better TWFing anyway). |

| Zaistars6910-17-06, 05:11 PM | Don't forget that the amulet of mighty fists is really a greater magic fang put into an amulet so it should cost like 30,000gp according to the rules. If you try to validate how the DMG prices things by using any of the charts you will usually have problems (wondrous items anyway). It's not simply a weapon enhancement put into an amulet, it effects every natural attack you have. Which is no big deal if your a wolf but say a good size dragon: claw/claw/bite/wing/wing/tail slap...... It could be a very nice item for it's price. |

I'm thinking that the x1.5 thing only works one way, to INCREASE the price of a magic item. You COULD create a similar item, like a belt or bracers or gauntlets, as it says in the link above, for the same price. But if you tried making boots or a hat or a cloak, then you'd have to pay the x1.5...since it's an uncustomary space. Good try, though. :D |

The formulas and tables for estimating the cost of new magic items are just guidelines, and are just for the DM's benefit. Players really shouldn't be using those tables (especially to get lower-priced items). If your DM feels that the amulet of mighty fist is overpriced, fine. He can adjust prices without or without the table's guidance. |
| draconic_swine10-17-06, 10:21 PM | There's also the fact that there are the bracers of armour, so I suppose the game designers didn't want monks to have to choose between attack and defence. |

| Jay_Ibero_91110-17-06, 10:43 PM | You could always make gloves of mighty fists...then you take little away from the monk since they can then have periapt of wisdom and belt of giant strength...or you could just get a belt of magnificence +6 and break the monke completely...may as well just let him start with an 18 in every stat before racial adjustments...sometimes I think it might be fun to play in a game like that just to see what characters do with full power in their primary stats, as well as good scores in stats they aren't used to having... |
| bondious10-18-06, 01:45 PM | But they do have to choose between Attack and Defense with the AoMF and Periapt of Wisdom I've always allowed a Peripat of Wisdom to be made into a Headband of Wisdom, no mark up. With that in mind, the monk could THEN utilize both an Amulet of Mighty Fists AND the widsom increasing powers of a Headband of Wisdom. |

With the power of spellcasters at the level a monk is going to get a +6 belt of mag it would be silly to say it's broken. The belt doesn't even bring the monk on par with a wiz or cleric/druid of that level. It does however make them cooler |
