Alright, my newest character is a little old Gnome wizard. He's a kind old man who travels the world for one reason: in order to cure his chronic back pain which cannot be cured by any magic known so far.
His back pain was caused by a crippling blow given to him by a currupt mage who used a spell he created himself. After this blow was bestowed upon the old Gnome the corrupt mage went along and slaughtered his family. what is not exactly known is if the chronic back pain is magical or tramatic stress.
Either way he now has constant chronic pain in his back, and he uses "medication" to relieve the pain. Since we are talking about a while back, I'm pretty sure there was no medicines like what we have today, so instead I am goin to have him used drugs such as opium, cocane, and all thoes other illicit drugs that he could have used. Either way I am not sure about the costs (although I think most drugs would probably have been cheaper back then) either way I want everyone to send in a drug that could have been used, what you think it would cost, and what affects it would have (im imagining some stat modifications, and some state of mind changes).
Thanks to those who enter their opinions. Chronic pain happened back then too you know.

In addition I decided this was the best place to put it.... and if this stuff actually is in a DND book somewhere tell me. Thanks

Since we are talking about a while back, I'm pretty sure there was no medicines like what we have todayI'm pretty sure we didn't have gnomes and magic awhile back either ;)

I'd check out any of the many herblism resources for d20. Herbs in fantastic worlds can often work better than many modern medicines.

If I were doing this though*, I would just treat it all as flavor text and roleplaying fodder. Since the character generation system isn't that detailed, disadvantages like this (cost, stat modifications etc.) don't need to be calculated or imposed, since you also gained no advantage by taking this affectation.

*Indeed, my current wizard was described as being afflicted with all manner of maladies (both real and imagined) taking plenty of medicines supplied by disreputable sales-men. But I don't actually spend any acquired money for it... I just assume he also has side businesses and such that covers this. Mechanics-wise, it can all be ignored since it is not governed by the core rules.

The Ebberon Campain Setting (or was it Sharn?) book has a drugs section in the equipment and services. I don't remember off hand what sorts of drugs. Illicit fantasy drugs. Not real life drugs, but there could be some thing for you in there. Or at least a guidline for prices and system ideas.

BoVD has some info on drugs and such.

since you've taken corrupt damage i would think you've got access to it.
