"Mighty" weapon descriptor [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-28-06, 04:16 PM What does the term "Mighty" mean when applied to a bow? In a recent encounter, my party found a "+2 Mighty Composite Longbow", which my fighter took as part of his share of the treasure. The problem is that I can't find a definition for "Mighty". For the time being I'm just treating it as a Composite Longbow (+2 Str bonus). My fighter isn't going to be using it much anyway, but just in case...

Did "Mighty" disappear in 3.5e? The module (Speaker In Dreams) was written for 3.0e.

01-28-06, 04:40 PM You're using it exactly right. "Mighty" are the stronger pull versions of composite bows designed full use by characters of greater than normal Strength. See pages 119 and 120-121 for descriptions (in with the normal composite bow descriptions). Note that they are no longer called mighty in 3.5 rules, and I see you got the name from a 3.0 source.

P.S. I think one of the reasons they changed this was to make the description of the bow less ambiguous - for example, a "+1 composite longbow (+3 str)" is a lot clearer than a "+1 mighty +3 composite longbow".

01-29-06, 01:44 AM It all depends on how your DM wants it to read.

It really COULD be a +2 Longbow with a +2 Pull for Strength on it, making it a magical weapon. The key is to make sure you ask your DM carefully what it is, because you deifnately rather have a +2 longbow than just a +2 mighty longbow.

I suppose, since we're finished with Speaker in Dreams, I could peek into the copy that's sitting on the shelf at the comic book store to see the exact printed wording. Or just ask to see the DMs copy if he has it with him on Tuesday.

01-29-06, 12:42 PM If you got it off a LE female human cleric/fighter by the name of farji then it is a comp long bow with a +2 str damage bonus. Thats the only one i saw in the appendix.

In the temple of Pelor? Also equipped with a +2 heavy flail of shock (or is that +2 shock heavy flail)? That's probably it then. I don't remember the DM saying "female", or her name, but it was definitely a cleric. Toughest "monster" in the encounter - killed my fighter and had my paladin down to 5 HP. Her buffs rendered the party's druid and bard completely ineffective

01-29-06, 04:19 PM The book only says a dire flail but your DM could have easily added the shocking ability, but yes it was the cleric in the temple of pelor.
