I've heard the idea people want combat to be more real aka: more gritty. I only have three ideas so far for this feat, but i'll try.

Firstoff critical hits should not exsist in the sense they multiply damage dealt. Critical hit should just mean auto-success on striking a foe.

As well, we should assume 0hp=dead. No negative stuff as disabled will be a stat brought about by the weapon itself.

Dagger
Damage: 1d4+str mod
Critical: 19-20
Weight: --

Effect:
Those striken with the dagger have a 5% chance of being struck in a major autery. This makes them take 1 con damage every round untill someone peforms a heal check on them DC 21. Alternatively they can peform a heal check on themself but take a -9 check penalty.

Handgun
Damage: 2d8 if Magnum, 2d6 if Revolver, 2d4 if Derringer
Range: 120feet if Magnum, 100feet if Revolver, 50feet if Derringer
Critical: 20
Weight: 3lbs if Magnum/Revolver, 1lb if Derringer
Ammunition: 17 per magizine if Magnum, six if Revolver, 2 if Derringer

Effect:
The typical handgun does not have enough force to make a foe fall prone. However, the shock from the blast forces a foe to make a fortitude save 14 or become prone.

The handgun also has a 5% chance of leaving the foe disabled for 1d20+2 rounds.

Club
Damage: 1d3+str mod
Crit: 20
Weight: 1lb

Effect:
Depending on where struck with the club it can have a differant but as severe an effect.

If struck in the leg make a reflex saving throw DC 18 or fall prone.

If struck in the head make a fortitude saving throw DC 14 or become unconsciouse.

If struck anywhere else the foe takes an additional 2 damage.

Welcome to DnD. Our idea of "Realistic" involves more headaches than you can deal with. Leave your logic at the door, and watch out for flying Halflings screaming at the top of their lungs.

Seriously though: realism has no place in DnD. Nice effort on the weapons though.

Wouldn't a realistic weapon system be something like "1 hit you are probably dead, 2 hits you are most likely dead, and 3 hits you can't possibly still be alive"?

Assuming at least Simple or Martial weapons which do at least 1d4 damage of course :P

Pretty much all efforts on "realistic" combat merely create a need for character sheets on tear-off writing pads. Imagine the scene:

"Ah, so you have finally come to me, to take revenge for your village I burned down..."-"Er, no. We're the guys who took over from the guys who took over from the guys who... well, I believe you burned down someone's village, but they're long dead and we don't really have any special motivation except for wanting to do some combat already in order to get replaced by even more characters..."

The most "realistic" I've seen is in the Black Co. critical system.
Characters will get scarred, crippled and maimed eventually if they fight long enough, which effects their health, movement etc...

there is never going to be a good balance between realism and gameplay on a HP system. i liked Shadowrun's and Vampire's in that everyone is equally hurt and so on, but even then, it's not 100%. nothing is.
for ultimately real combat, you're kinda' implying a standard human of 1 HD, probably a d6 to boot. having more levels just means you can roll w/ the hits easier, higher pain threshold, etc. you're still getting hit, you just cope better vs. less experience adesaries and the like.
your dagger is particularly vicious. Heal 21? isn't it only 15 just to stabilize?

The vitality point system from Star Wars and Unearthed Arcana works well for this. Vitality points are more bullets whipping through the air around a character and that sort of thing. Actual contact doesn't occur until the damage goes to wound points. It's not 100% realistic but it is a little more so than the straight forward hit point system. It is still flawed realistically compared to other condition monitor systems like World of Darkness or Shadowrun, but what the hell, it's a game.

I'm willing to sacrifice some realism for the opportunity to sit down with my friends and tell a cool story.

None of these effects mesh well with a system where your biology runs on "positive energy" and said "postive energy" can heal burns, replace lost blood, mend broken bones and perfectly perform hundreds of other repairs that even modern surgery has a shaky chance at fixing.
