| Gimmley12-30-07, 12:43 PM | When determining the distance for diagonal squares, the 1st square is 5’ the second is 10’, which brings the total to 15’… correct? Is this the same when determining the reach of a weapon? Another words, if a weapon has a reach of 10’, can it reach a person that’s two diagonal squares away (distance 15’)? I have a DM saying that it can because it shows it in the DM’s guide, but I think the grid in the DM’s guide is wrong and some time ago they put out an addendum to fix that. Am I correct? If so, where can I find the corrected grids? |
| Novacat12-30-07, 12:48 PM | Note: Small and Medium creatures wielding reach weapons threaten all squares 10 feet (2 squares) away, even diagonally. (This is an exception to the rule that 2 squares of diagonal distance is measured as 15 feet.) You DM is right. |

It says the following: Note: Small and Medium creatures wielding reach weapons threaten all squares 10 feet (2 squares) away, even diagonally. (This is an exception to the rule that 2 squares of diagonal distance is measured as 15 feet.) |

A common mistake that I have seen (typically by enlarged spike chain fighters) is expecting to have 4 square reach on the diagonals when Large and with reach. The 2 squares for medium reach is a compromise; that compromise doesn't extend farther than it has to, leaving large reach on the diagonals at 20 feet (3 squares) rather than 30 feet (4 squares). |
