Can a druid's animal companion wear armor? If I get say a wolf, could I buy nonhuman armor for it? How would that work?

It seems like the same thing as barding for horses. Except the animal companion is smarter.

I thought this was going to be using animal comapnions as armor (like Ura the Armor cat).

Yes, it's called 'barding.' It's just like regular armor, but costs twice as much. You can even get it MW or enchanted (MW & magic costs aren't doubled).

Your Wolf is not proficient in it, though, so you'd want to stick to armor with little or no armor-check penalty (since that penalty will aply to a lot of stuff without proficiency, like AB, for instance). Padded, Leather, Masterwork Studded, and Mithral Chain 'Shirt' versions of barding all have -0 ACP.

Enjoy.

You can take the armor proficiency as one of the feats though right? I am thinking a wolf probably wouldn't wear metal armor though, since the druid isn't allowed to wear it.

Animals don't care. Horses can be animal companions and they wear full plate barding sometimes I've seen.

since warhorses are proficient with armor, all me DMs have ruled that teaching your animal companion the combat riding trick tree gives it armor proficiency

page 123 of the players handbook show a chart for giving unusual creatures armor.

I made my Dire Wolf take Armor Proficiency light and needless to say he is not to be taken lightly

No, training for war does not grant Armor Proficiency, nor Warhorse (and Warpony) has Armor Proficiency by nature.

Warhorse is still an animal, and no animal has proficiency of manufactured weapon or armor (see MM). Training for war only let animals willingly wear barding. To the extreme, no rules prevent an untrained animal wearing barding.

A warhorse still incurs all ACP on attack roll and movement skill check. However, a warhorse (and other horse trained for war) seldom attacks with their hoofs or makes skill check, it is not a matter to wear even heavy barding.

To the OP question:

Yes, your wolf companion can wear barding (armor for animal). Padded, Leather, masterwork Studded Leather armor have no ACP, so your wolf (with no Armor Proficiency) can wear one of them without facing penalty on attack roll and skill check. If you have money, you can buy a mithral Chain Shirt for it.

PHB P.123 has a table, showing you how much and heavy is armor for “unusual creature”. And P.131 has information about what kind of care you should take on your barding animal.

See the Monster Manual glossary description of the Animal type. Animals who are "trained for war" are proficient in armor.

There is no good definition of what "trained for war" means. I've asked Customer Service, but they've ignored me.
