| hazardnwt11-08-05, 04:18 PM | Can anyone inform me on the body locations on non-humanoid creatures for magic items? A few classes gain creatures as companions (wizard/sorcerer/druid/ranger/paladin) and if they wanted to protect their four legged friend (or another animal) what all could they get? |

One skull cap or helm One pair of lenses or goggles One collar One saddle blanket or vest One saddle or jacket One belt or strap worn in front of or over the haunches One pectoral or harness worn over the chest or shoulders One pair foreleg bracers One pair of foreleg shoes or mitts -- hoofed creatures wear shoes and creatures with paws wear mitts Two rings -- creatures with toes wear rings on the toes and creatures with hooves wear "rings" just above fore hooves One pair of hind leg shoes or mitts -- hoofed creatures wear shoes and creatures with paws wear mitts" |

A bird can wear a ring around its leg (like a leg-band), but probably couldn't do bracers (unless it's a really BIG bird, like a giant eagle). A bracelet could work in the same spot (like the gryphon in Suikoden III) or around the tail. A belt might work as a sort of girth-strap. Some DMs allow strange stuff like a shirt/vest or cloak. Theoretically you could use lenses, though that'd be weird lookin' (but adorable on a parrot, if they're the little pince-nez type glasses). My preference would be, beyond obvious things like amulets, headbands, or rings, to require specially made magic items. Where appropriate, an enchanted saddle is equivalent to a belt or cloak (possibly allow both an enchanted saddle and a separately-enchanted girth strap), barding is equivalent to armor, and so forth. The Draconomicon might help with this; it has some magic items made for unusual anatomies that only animals have, like tails. |
| Keenath11-08-05, 05:13 PM | Oh, yeah... I forgot something I wanted to share. One of my DMs, in a weirder mood, had the group running around on missions for a mysterious voice-from-the-shadows, like Charlie from Charlie's Angels. Well, it turns out it was a raven familiar of a dead wizard, who wanted our help (eventually) in recovering the body and returning him to life. Doing that, of course, involved destroying the monster that had turned him to stone in the first place.... Well, anyway, the raven had his master's old Hat of Disguise, and used it to covertly keep tabs on our progress. That led to some funny situations, since the hat always remains (in some form) no matter what form you take... The poor raven actually thought he was being stealthy when he was watching us in the form of a large chicken...wearing a top-hat. Which said "Cluck!" as we went by. Not the sound, he actually SAID "Cluck!" in common. |
