PHB:
Dog, Guard 25gp - and give it the Hunting package from Handle Animal skill.

As for the rest, as a rule of thumb (based on PH prices).

Domesticated: HD*25gp
Wartrained/Wild: HD*50gp
Suitable as a mount: x2

Remember that a lot of the Tiny creatures are 1/4 or 1/8 HD, so are cheap.

there is an extensive section on mounts, snd animals suitable for use as such in the arms and equipment guide. It discusses the costs for eggs, young, rearing and complete combat training of te creature, all based on it challenge rating.

isn't it a 3.0 book?

Yes, but lots of it is appropriate for a 3.5 game. The weapons section needs a bit of help (since weapon sizing changed in 3.5), but a little common sense will work there. Information about adventuring equipment and such isn't so easily outdated.

one of my friends took a pig with him into every dungeon. He would throw him ahead of the party to set off any possible traps. If the pig died we ate him..... and he bought another pig....

OK got the book, an there is nothing in there about my question...
it lists the pricing and DC for rearing of special prts and mounts, nothing about regular beasts
perhaps it was listed in the 3.0 MM?

Owlbears dont look like they could be mounts...

but if a dwarf can ride a grizzly I dont see why not.

like an owlbear

price and DC's for the owlbear, as well as rules for it as a mount are on pages 75 and 82 of the A&EG. pay very close attention to the part about how it will attack you if you take more than 15 points of damage in a round and fail a DC 20 ride check (this is discussed on the second page, as that is where they talk about riding one into combat). you may be able to compensate for this with some kind of magical item, but you would have to find a spell (like charm monster that will render them receptive to you and your friends, and then make a continious item of that spell.

the item of charm monster will set you back *about* 20,000gp. It breaks down like this - 4th level spell, 7th level caster, 2000 for continous, .5 for day/level duration, .7 for only useable on a bugbear (4x7x2000x.5x.7).

I rounded the cost up by 400gp just to get a round number, and because i had alreay gotten the 30% discount for the retriction on what kind of creature it can be used.

you misunderstood me, i want a simple pet (a hawk to be more specific), i gave the owlbear as an example to whats in A&EG
simple stuff like normal beats are not listed...
