I was playing around with making a Succubus Fiend of Possession(FF), and actually carrying around a statue to posses and fight with. (If there wasn't a decent host available.)

It says in the description of the power that you animate the object you posses as if using the spell Animate Object, and refer to the Monster Manual. The thing i'm curious about is whether or not a special material (like oh, I don't know adamantine) would have different HP.

I found online a site that said a human (medium creature) would have a volume of about 4 cubic feet. So following how it works in d&d you could assume a large creature would be about 16cf.

Using the Stronghold builders guide's description of freestanding walls I came up with Adamantine having HP equal to 4.8 per cubic foot, or 76.8 for a large statue. Thats more than a large animated object has even without the +30 a large construct gets. I'm basically asking whether it seems logical and balanced for special material animated objects to have more HP.

Also. One section of Adamantine wall costs 3000gp and has a volume of 50cf for a price of 60gp per cubic foot, or 960gp for the large statue. (raw material.) To me this sounds obscenely cheep. If you look in the DMG (which has the advantage of being a 3.5 source) adamantine costs 5000gp to make light armor from it. As a Chain Chirt is the only light armor that can be made from adamantine it could logically be construed that it makes a good basis to determine the material price.

A chain shirt weighs 25lbs and takes 5000 gp worth of adamantine to make. So thats 200gp per pound. Unless Adamantine has a phenomenally low density, which I doubt, or you get a massive cost break for buying in bulk, which also doesn't make since.

Which also leaves the question of how much it weighs. Since it doesn't change the weight, you could assume that it weighs as much as steel. However, I'm not aware of anywhere that has the weight of steel by volume in a D&D book. According to google, it would be 490lbs a cf, or 7840lbs for a large statue, which seems to fit nicely with the Iron Golem weighing 5000lbs. (one would assume it is not solid like a statue.)

Assuming that logic, and using the price like a weapon it would cost about 1.6 million gp. You can by a (small) fortress with adamantine skinned walls for that, so that doesn't sound right either.

I'm basically just asking for opinions and thoughts on this. I was also thinking a command word shrink would be cool, to carry it around, but that's prohibitively expensive, especially since it would take a long long time to use enough wands of shrink for the prices to work out.

Couple of things to think about:

Adamantine's price, per pound, is actually very low(100gp per pound of raw ore). It's the cost of actually working the material that changes it's price, as adamantine(one presumes) is difficult to work with requiring special tools, alchemical fuel, etc.

Metalic statues, generally speaking, are hollow... because' it's freaking expensive and really hard to work with solid metal.

In terms of price for the statue, assuming a large, hollow form, I would price it as being relatively close to a suit of large adamantine fullplate(being that it's hollow and all) with a 30-50% price increase for artistic factors. That should be a a more reasonable price, all things considered, for this. You wouldn't necessarily gain any extra hitpoints on the animated object this way, but you would benefit from Adamantine's hardness and should, since fullplate normally inlcudes two gauntlets, have your slam attacks count as adamantine for overcoming hardness and damage reduction.

Sure, why not?
An animated sheet of glass is going to have different stats from a statue of onyx.
I'd probably double or triple HP based on size, and add hardness based on the composition. And depending on the weight of the material, the mobility of the object could be lowered.

The thing i'm curious about is whether or not a special material (like oh, I don't know adamantine) would have different HP.No. Only the hardness would be changed.

I came up with Adamantine having HP equal to 4.8 per cubic foot, or 76.8 for a large statue. Thats more than a large animated object hasMaybe animated objects easier to de-activate than they are to completely break apart... i.e. once 'killed', statue might still be mostly intact. Regardless, the rules are what they are.

thats 200gp per pound. That sounds about right. I believe adamantine (as a trade good) was listed as 100 gp per pound in the Draconomicon, but that's unworked.

it would cost about 1.6 million gp. You can by a (small) fortress with adamantine skinned walls for that, so that doesn't sound right either.Maybe make the statue adamantine coated instead.

r 7840lbs for a large statue, .

How would you carry it around, whilst it was not animated?
