I'm going to be playing a samurai iaijutsu master (oa) in an upcoming non asian themed game... There is the running theme that katanas can cut through tanks, and all that. Then there are the naysayers that say "katanas can't do that, they'll break". So... I came up with a good idea.... Why not use an adamantine katana? Its the dnd representation of super-masterwork.

With an adamantine katana, according to game rules, and physics, I can infact cut through a tree. Does that seem like a fair idea to get the anime capacity, without bending reality too much?

Thats my anime katana. Adamantine.

Yes, that sounds reasonable.

You want a katana cutting through trees, make it out of adamantine.

Note that you still have to deal enough hit points. Wood has 10 hp per inch of thickness, so a 5-inch diameter tree would take about 50 hp to cut through. That would be a lot for one blow. But adamantine would do better than iron, since it ignores the hardness.

Don't forget that a SKILLED Katana Wielder will know to use his full BAB as two handed Power Attack against the relatively low AC of a motionless tree, giving a much greater chance of cutting through in a single stroke.

Completely reasonable. Just use your iaijutsu focus in combination with what the poster above me said and you could indeed cut through pretty much anything.

eventually make that sucker plant-bane

run from village to village cutting down all the trees. Call your PC "Internashunal Paipur"

Scour the land making thneeds and getting rich until the ninja and yakooza have to kill you around lvl 17

oh and beware the lorax, he weilds a vorpal axe and can fly by the seat of his pants (free action, yo). Got a nasty suggestion DC too, but that should be no problem.

build a tower and make him pay you to speak with you... use a long bucket for exchange.

zombie barbalutes, in barbalute suits (+4 AC, -2 AC pen, +1 max dex).

DM: A 1? well the tree beats your initiative
PC: What happens?!?
DM: It bends.
PC: It bends? Does it break?!?!?!
DM: It bends but does not Break
PC: I attack the tree!!!!!!!

so we agree anime katana = adamantine katana

Now to solve the cutting through trees dealy, you use iaijutsu focus from OA do do up to 1/2*9d6 additional damage, while full power attack 2handing it for 1.5x str

1d10+1.5xstr+1/2 9d6+10
if you are an iaijutsu master, like the character I am planning this for, thats 1d10+1.5xstr+1/2(9d6+9xcha)+10

There, you broke a 1 foot thick tree :P

at 20 (where any anime character should be), this character has great cleave, power attack, can dimensional door as a move action (a couple totemist), iaijutsu damage up the wazoo, the ability to force people to be flatfooted (adamantine katana sunblade combined with flick of the wrist, or tome of battle maneuver), which represents cutting people in half, essentially, deflect arrows (2 levels in monk), and sunschool to go with that dimensional door...

while maxing out at 3 attacks per round, 1 is vs flatfooted, 1 is regular, and 1 is after a dimensional door...

Wee bit crazy build with no + ability score mod from items having an initiative of 19...

2 monk
2 swordsage
2 fighter
2 samurai (OA)
2 totemist
10 iaijutsu master

Crazy anime character :P

Then go epic iaijutsu master!

07-03-07, 12:57 AM
heh, with great cleave that forest is done for. But yea, cutting through impossible stuff is pretty much what adamantine is all about, regardless of if its a katana or not.

::EDIT:: I just thought i would say, this is the perfect creation of "zomg it can deflect arrows/lop of heads at 30ft/cut through a tank". Because its not your katana thats doing it. Its you.

Don't forget to get the Sundering Cleave maneuver.
Nothing says "pwned" better than to cut through someone's weapon, then the wielder, in one swing.

i thought that iaijutsu focus was erratad to deal full damage to objects. could be wrong, though.

No, you are right. It was change to ignore hardness a long while after 3.5 came out.

Yeah hmm... I looked up the errata... that line has been removed...

I just liked the fact that I could legitmently make an anime-style character using dnd rules, without breaking game mechanics entirely.

(magic (dimensional door nsuch), iaijutsu focus skill, near unbreakable katanas (adamantine)... its all in all a good package

I saw all these katana can cut through X with ease debates, and I thought "adamantine?"

the ability to force people to be flatfooted (adamantine katana sunblade combined with flick of the wrist)

Excellent idea. I was considering feats to treat katanas as light weapons for use with Flick of the Wrist (and I grant this as a class feature in my rebalanced samurai class in my sig). The thought that a sun blade could be a katana never occured to me.

you can iaijutsu focus with any weapon
katana is just more thematic

katana sunblade is directly in the oriental adventures book

I'm surprised no one suggested it earlier (If they, in fact, did not. I don't keep up with katana threads.)

What about this alternate build?

Fighter 4/Rogue 3/Totemist 2/Exotic Weapon Master 1/Kensai 5/Incandescent Champion 5
Feats
Indigo Strike
Flick of the Wrist
Psycarnum Infusion
Quick Draw
Weapon Focus, Specialisation, Improved Critical (katana)
Wild Talent
Soulmelds
Blink Shirt (bound to totem chakra)
Rageclaws (bound to hands chakra)
any other

It has plenty of "I'll never give up!" abilities, and you can even shoot energy blades out of your sword!
Fallenangel359

07-05-07, 03:39 PM
while I like the exotic weapon master idea, the fighter 4, 3 rogue doesn't sti well with me, nor does the kensai, when you can get much of the same from 2 samurai... also misses out on iaijutsumaster for rediculous damage

One thing you could try is 1 swordsage, 1 monk, 1 fighter, 2 totemist, 2 samurai, 5 iaijutsu master, 1 exotic weapon master (2handing the katana for 2x str),

Katana-rific but to be in the true spirit of anime you must also make the katana large and aquire the appropriate feats to wield correctly. also falming couldn't hurt.

Adamantine katana?

:D I wholeheartedly endorse this product or products.

Thought of this one a long time ago. I just never bother to make any of my weapons out of special materials.
Fallenangel359

iaijutsu focus is a skill that gives extra damage dice vs unattended objects, attended objects wielded by flatfooted opponents, or creatures who are flatfooted

It requires for you to start the round with your weapon sheathed, and then you draw it. The rest of the attacks in that round are then focused.

How many dice is based off a skill check, and it varies 1-9

iaijutsu master is a class that gives better initiative, int to ac, bonus feats, and 1x cha to each damage die from iaijutsu focus, aswell as some other goodies, which made it a lethal class, which oddly has quite a few deadlevels...

Basically, an iaijutsu master totemist monk combined with 1 exotic weapon master with great cleave, and an adamantine katana, with the cleaving sunder tactical maneuver can potentially oneshot an entire group of slightly lower level characters, and break all of their weapons, in 1 move action, which was a dimensional door :P

I love it. I win initiative, I go first, I dimensional door into the pack of them, drawing my sword at the same time, and attack one of them, ignoring their hardness, and doing 9d6+9xchamod+2xstrmod+1d10+enhbonus damage to their weapon, breaking it, cleaving through, hitting them, cleaving through, breaking the next guys weapon, cleaving through, killing them, cleaving through breaking the next guys weapon, etc etc

untill 8 are dead :P

07-11-07, 01:16 AM
I just stumbled ona way to simplify the build

2 samurai, 1 sohei, 2 fighter, 2 totemist, 1 iaijutsu master

the sohei takes care of the monk and weapon focus (swordsage) requirements in 1 level, and makes more thematic sense

With out getting too fanboy-ish, another idea is to make it have the same properties of adamantine with out being adamantine. I wouldn't do this with out adding double the adamantine costs to the weapon, and making a katana actually out of adamantine at that point cost triple and considered impossible by most smiths due to the odd material. This way the weapon is 1: still able to be diversified with other materials, and 2: still keep your idea which I like.
Fallenangel359

07-11-07, 10:34 AM
Fanboyish would be a 145lb 6 foot tall character with monkey grip, and a large sized adamantine katana

Another material that does the same thing is green star metal

Level 20 warblade with diamond mind..
Fallenangel359

07-11-07, 12:24 PM
time stands still is very anime :P

Swordsage could be interesting, actually

I liked iaijutsu master totemist as it was the whole oh there is a dude on a horse over there, I dimensional door over, cut the horses head off, and then cleave through the rider, killing the rider too

07-11-07, 02:45 PM
Swordsage is more ninja-ish with the shadow hand and setting sun. Warblade is more samurai with the iron heart and diamond mind.

What of incandescent champion? It seem to be one of the best ways to get those energy blades.

And now I don't know what sohei does... :weep:

AAB

Prime32

07-16-07, 03:08 PM
According to historical reports, zanbatou took two men to wield and were used against cavalry. However, pictures of zanbatou show them with handles that could not support the weight of the blade, so many suspect they never existed.

I'd make zanbatou exotic greatswords that can be readied against a charge.
AAB

07-16-07, 05:13 PM
the closest thing i've ever seen to a "historical" zanbatou would probably be a odachi forged specifically as an offering to a temple. they were more typically made as an indication of the smith's skill (it'd be damned hard to make a decent sword that was ten feet long) and devotion than an implement of war.

in fantasy, however, i have no problem with massive swords.
