| Yade09-12-04, 11:02 AM | I am a tolerant DM and I will allow players to argue things; provided they make sense and are within a realistic scope of the game. I have a player who is an avid anime fan and he keeps trying to make these weapons in game. Some of them are designed such that only a cartoon character could use them (18 inch wide blade, 7 ft long with a handle that is about 2 inches round) Other weapons are just out of control (Sword of Light that he keeps pushing for). I am very pleased that he approaches the game so enthusiatically, but I cannot get through to him on certain points. In the case of the first weapon mentioned I do not see how a player can weild this weapon, the blade is so wide and long that it would be super clumsy, and the circular handle in the middle would cause the blade to flip around as soon as it came in contact with something. My ruling was that he could have it if he made a STR check everytime he used it, if he accepted a critical fumble range of 1-4 and accepted that it only did a d8 in damage. In the case of the second weapon, I've seen the show. NO. To put it succinctly Help me get through to him. |
| obrysii09-12-04, 11:11 AM | While I have no idea what you're even talking about (what anime...?)... ...I made the cloak from Vampire Hunter D...it's a minor/major artifact, though: Meier Link's Cloak: This black cloak is made of the finest material, and when its magic is not being activated, it is unusually easy to control (it is easy to use it for its normal qualities that the standard cloak) and never needs to be washed. It never looses it's color, and is always soft to the touch. However, while these qualities alone would make the cloak a useful addition to anyone's wardrobe, it is its magical qualities that make it so powerful. It has four different settings, activated as a Free Action at Will. The first setting is its latent setting, and appears to be just any normal cloak, granting a +10 circumstance bonus on Hide checks. Its second setting allows it to act like a Wings of Flying (the bat wing version), granting the wearer a Fly speed 90ft (good). It's third and forth settings are the most useful, however. The third setting changes the cloak into a stiff wing-like shield. It acts like a +5 Tower Shield, and because the cloak moves of it's own will, the wearer does not gain the usual -2 attack penality when using it. In it's forth setting, the cloak becomes a weapon with a +5 enhancement bonus, dealing 1d12+5+wearer's strength bonus in slashing damage, with a 18-20/x2 critical hit modifier. Very few of these cloaks are known to exist. |
| bullfrog09-12-04, 11:44 AM | If I knew what anime the weapon you speak of came from a may be able to help you better. Anyway a lot of the weapons seen in anime could work as Exotic Weapons. |
| obrysii09-12-04, 11:49 AM | I get the feeling that he's talking about Tetsuiga...or however it's spelled....from Inuyasha. |
| Salamandyr09-12-04, 11:59 AM | I think the easiest thing to do is just give it the stats of the closest weapon, and leave what it looks like to the players imagination. Like for instance that huge sword from Inuyasha. Just say it's a magic greatsword and be done. If you really wanted to, you could call it a fullblade and let the player take a feat. The character gets a weapon that fits what their concept (big improbable jagged weapon) without introducing anything gamebreaking. I don't know what a sword of light is, but could a Brilliant Energy Shocking Burst Greatsword (with the appropriate high cost), or a Sun Blade do for game effects for the weapon? |
| Meion_leah09-12-04, 12:19 PM | I think the big sword is from Inuyash like all the rest of u do, and i think that the light sword that he is talking about is the one that Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho can make. i have no idea how you would make them in a DnD game but thoes are the anime shows i think he i talking about if that helps. |
| Art_Tillary09-12-04, 12:55 PM | The sword from Inuyasha seems to be a magical katana, at least in the movie. At one point the sword is stuck in the ground away from Inuyashu. It looks like a standard katana. If this is case, for d20, make the weapon have glow or illusiong that makes it look like 18" wide and 7 feet long. Damage and cast per a standard magical long sword. AT |

Kurama can make a Rose Whip....Kwuabara can make the energy blade...it's basically a Soulknife. |
| Yade09-12-04, 01:01 PM | Do any of you have stats on anime weapons or items that you have designed that you can post. I will ask them the name of the sword and series that they got it from. |
| Kirin Corrigan09-12-04, 05:02 PM | Do any of you have stats on anime weapons or items that you have designed that you can post. I will ask them the name of the sword and series that they got it from. Since the players that asked for the Sword of Light are the same who asked for spells like the Giga Slave, I'm pretty sure that they're referring to Gourry Gabriev's Gorun Nova (also known as "Sword of Light") seen in the Slayers series. The Sword of Light is out and out an artifact, created along with other 4 weapons by Darkstar (the equivalent of a god in the anime). It's essentially a greatsword hilt that generates a blade made of sheer force on command. Some spells, if cast using the sword as a focus, have their effects increased (as if empowered and maximized) and other spells, if channeled through the sword, greatly increase the damage of the blade. Since the blade is made of force, it ignores Damage Reduction of any kind. Hope this helps. |
| masterofmayhem09-12-04, 07:14 PM | Some of them are designed such that only a cartoon character could use them (18 inch wide blade, 7 ft long with a handle that is about 2 inches round) Sounds like a Xan-bato from Rurouni Kenshin (the weapon that Sanosuke Sagara uses). |
| HamHam09-12-04, 08:48 PM | Sounds like a Xan-bato from Rurouni Kenshin (the weapon that Sanosuke Sagara uses). And note how effective THAT turned out to be... |
| TMPikachu09-12-04, 08:51 PM | Sounds like a Xan-bato from Rurouni Kenshin (the weapon that Sanosuke Sagara uses). Zanbato is the Japanese name ZhanMaDao is the Chinese name. The one in Kenshin isn't really what it looks like. The ZhanMaDao is a Chinese blade used by elite anti-cavalry troopers. They take the form of 6ft swords. 4ft blade, 2 ft handle. One edge. |
| toomre09-13-04, 12:41 AM | There are rules for what it takes to wield larger than normal weapons in the PHB (pg 113). Also, the feat Monkey Grip and the epic feat Wield Oversized Weapons both from Complete Warrior should allow your friend to wield a pretty damn big weapon. |
| bullfrog09-13-04, 11:29 AM | Well if it’s the sword from Inuyasha I would make it a magic katana that can turn into a a falchion (well what D&D calls a falchion anyway.) I believe he uses it in 1 hand in the show. If thats the case I would allow it with the EWP feat to use a katana in one hand. If it’s the zanbato from Rurouni Kenshin I would rule it as a huge weapon that needs EWP and moneky Grip to use 2 handed. I would need to look at my books to come up with stats for it. |

Inuyasha's also a very strong demon too. He fights with both hands, but he occasionally props it on his shoulder to pose or so. |
| Rian Lightblade09-13-04, 03:33 PM | If I knew what anime the weapon you speak of came from a may be able to help you better. Anyway a lot of the weapons seen in anime could work as Exotic Weapons. It could be Gut's Big Ass Sword from "Berserk". I once made a fighter based off of him but I used the game equivalent a, "Full Blade". And as a DM that's the only thing I'd allow, the game equivalent. |
| bullfrog09-17-04, 12:26 PM | It could be Gut's Big Ass Sword from "Berserk". I can’t help with that one. I’ve never seen that show. As for stats for the zanbato I think the stats for the full blade fit it nicely. The weight may be a bit low for such a weapon. It should be a reach weapon as well doing damage with both spaces like the spiked chain but this would make it far to powerful. Perhaps it could only do damage at the point like a spear and then have a feat to let it do damage in both spaces. I will have to play test some of these ideas. |
| Lord Nat09-17-04, 07:37 PM | The Sword of Light is from The Slayers (There even happens to be a d20 book out for this by Guardians Of Order but I do not happen to own it). It's a hilt of a sword that can hold a basic blade and when you press a little trigger on the hilt the blade will come out and them you say "Light come forth!" it mades a blade of light come from the hilt. It can be used to kill true monsters (In the anime there was true monsters that can no be killl any other way) and be used as a offering in some spells (They use it once to cast the most power full black summoing spell in the world). |
| allenchan09-17-04, 08:09 PM | The same way a katana is a masterwork bastard sword, just find something similiar and convert it into game terms. Sounds like his weapon would compare to a masterwork fullblade. |
| Vaalingrade Ashland09-18-04, 09:14 PM | Gourry's Sword of Light (Gorun Nova): +2 Extended (http://www.ledgermaincomics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=871#871) Brillant Energy Bastard Sword. Special: Gorun Nova may be used as the arcane focus for any spell that requires a ranged touch attack. Spells cast using Gorun Nova are treated as if Maximized. |

I guess you don't favor the use of the Monkey Grip feat from the Complete Warrior supplement. It was seen originally in 3rd Edition's Sword and Fist supplement. Looking past the name, its for people who use oversized weapons. I made an advanced version of this feat called Giant's Grip. http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=4430095&posted=1#post4430095 Remember, this is a fantasy game -- and its usually high fantasy. When was the last time you saw a dragon fly overhead and exhale hot death on villagers? |
| Kirin Corrigan09-19-04, 12:20 PM | Gourry's Sword of Light (Gorun Nova): +2 Extended (http://www.ledgermaincomics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=871#871) Brillant Energy Bastard Sword. Vaal, if there's one thing that Gorn Nova is not, that's being a Brilliant Energy weapon. The hilt creates a blade of pure force that can affect objects (a BE weapon could not). |
| JabberWocky09-19-04, 02:44 PM | Just on a note, I'd say that the Tetsusaiga is an intelligent weapon with special purpose: defend humans. Its special abilities are all very powerful, but they are locked until its wielder comes into a situation that could be justified as defending a human from demons. At least I'd say it goes from being a dull katana (critical threat range is only on a natural 20) that deals 1d6 damage to an upsized falchion with (possibly) +3 enchantment, demonbane (since all demons are the same creature in Inuyasha), and speed at least. I'm not going to touch the wind scar technique. |
| obrysii09-19-04, 02:50 PM | I'm not going to touch the wind scar technique. ...and that's it's weakest technique :mymy: |
| Kurama Youko09-19-04, 04:00 PM | 1.) Just tell him to take the monkey grip feat from Complete Warrior, -2 to attack checks with the weapon and he can wield a Two handed weapon of a size catagory one larger than himself. Thus he could wield a Huge Greatsword with a -2 to attack checks but he has to wield it with both hands and the damage is about 3d6. 2.) The anime your refering to is Slayers. The Sword of Light Gourry's weapon is little more than a Flame Blade except instead of Fire Damage its dealing Light Damage. Meaning normal damage to all creatures as per the rules of the Flame blade except that when it comes to creatures with Light sensitivity its alot more affective (By this im mean in terms of handling it in D&D Terms not how it specifically works in Slayers.) in other words, its a scimitar or longsword if you like and it does 1d8+10 points of light damage normal creatures (no resistance from elemental protection spells applies.) The sword is immaterial thus it doesnt get his strenght bonus and attacks with it are treated as melee touch attacks (it ignores Natural Armor and Material Armor.) (If I had to choose how it works against light sensitive creatures I'd up the die to 1d10+20) Thats all, you just have to know how to interpret things into a D&D setting. For people wondering how to pull off a wind scar, I'd say this. Ranged Attack against the target, if successful the damage done with the attack is equal to a normal attack with the chosen weapon plus strenght bonuses and enchantment bonuses, subtractt the subjects total AC from the damage as a special type of damage reduction and let the subject take whatevers left over. ie Inuyasha preforms Wind Scar for 35 points of damage on Gruff who has a AC 23 thus Gruff only takes 12 points of damage. This damage is identical to the type of damage the weapon produces (slashing, blungeoning, piercing.) and is considered magic/lawful/chaotic or whatever for the purpose of normal damage reductions only if the weapon can normally penetrate those DR's. |
| Vaalingrade Ashland09-19-04, 04:24 PM | Vaal, if there's one thing that Gorn Nova is not, that's being a Brilliant Energy weapon. The hilt creates a blade of pure force that can affect objects (a BE weapon could not). Touche. We talked about this at some point before at some point and I think it was UnholyDragoon who theorized that the sword of Light had an enchantment not unlike BE that cut through natural armor instead of bypassing armor bonuses. |
| Watchman09-20-04, 05:27 AM | ...and want to try converting the funny spell-augmenting/storing capabilities of the whole Darkstar weapons bunch...? :D Not really worth the trouble IMHO - those buggers are unique artifacts anyway. Giving one to a D&D char is about like letting a Wizard starting at level 5 get his or her mitts on Dragon Slave... |

Giving one to a D&D char is about like letting a Wizard starting at level 5 get his or her mitts on Dragon Slave... Well, I've actually statted the Sword of Light for one of my high level campaigns. But only the version with the "limiter" on it (pre-phibrizzo, so to speak). And I think it was worth it, too. |
| Vaalingrade Ashland09-22-04, 08:24 PM | The Darkstar Weapons have a bigger effect/Deal more damage based on the user's Cha score*. I'd say they maximze a spell a number of times equal to the user's Cha modifier, deal an additional damage (light damage?) of 1d6+1d6/point of Cha modifier, at a range od 10x Cha score. In addition, the area of effect of spells cast through darkstar weapons doulbes for each Darkstar weapon present. *Lina mentions that the Sword of Light transforms the user's will into power. Force of personality seems key, as Gourry under Hellmaster's control could do amazing things. |
| Vahenir09-23-04, 01:03 AM | Just a warning: These kinds of conversations never end well. Anyway.. Statting most things you find in anime becomes near impossible for a few reasons. 1) Most of them are entirely implausible, beyond even the scope of D&D style fantasy. So we, in real life, have nothing to gauge it against, and have almost as little hope in game terms. 2) Because of number 1, no one can ever agree on what the hell all those ridiculous things do. Something to consider is the -fantasy level- of your game. That plays an important factor in determining what you, as a DM, should even bother considering. In a standard D&D game, it's generally assumed multiple weapons can be found with any given enhancement - as well as many other items with previously unseen enhancements. Some enhancements, of course, are so common as to be practically mundane. But the weapons and enhancements still fall along a line of believability and logic. In a low to mid-magic game, like those I typically run - you won't find almost any magical items, and those that are magical are typically not above a +5 enhancement, for the most powerful items. And no items are simply a +5 longsword. If it's that powerful, it has special enhancements. But even items that are +1 are rare. Neither of these gaming styles is particularly suited to the majority of anime pseudo-fantasy items. Now, if you run a very high-magic campaign where every Captain of the Guard carries a +1 Keen Longsword and kings are walking around with +4 Keen Vorpal Flaming Greatswords.... and most mundane warriors at least use masterwork and +1 quality items... Well.. then you're getting somewhere. Because in that type of world, you're more apt to find the more "logically implausible" items and explain them away very simply. In this type of world.. it's not hard to make a Large size Greatsword with enhancements that keep the damage the same, but lower the weight and other factors to a normal size weapon, or smaller (if you want to use it one-handed). Or you can go in a slightly different direction and make a Large size Greatsword with enhancements and use Wield Oversize Weapon and Monkey Grip in conjunction (which would have to be a houserule) to let a player wield it one-handed at some serious penalties. In any event.. items like those found in anime typically require a lot of houserules and as Watchman said.. tend to be more trouble than they're worth. |
| deusxmachina09-23-04, 02:20 AM | At least the player didn't ask to use an EVA 01 or something. |
| Vaalingrade Ashland09-23-04, 02:56 AM | Now, if you run a very high-magic campaign where every Captain of the Guard carries a +1 Keen Longsword and kings are walking around with +4 Keen Vorpal Flaming Greatswords.... and most mundane warriors at least use masterwork and +1 quality items... Well.. then you're getting somewhere. Good thing that's exactly what Ere is. |
| Farealmer09-23-04, 03:52 AM | The problem with the wind scar is it's properties are so erratic that it is nearly a plot device rather than an attack. But if i was going to do it i would say that before the swing the user deciedes how far the attack will go(in the show Inuyasha could control how far the slash went) and it would have a damage pool. basically a set number of damage it can do per swing. Say 300hp(for example the number is likely higher) which means it if it kills a creature with 50 hp it would still be able to do 250 more hp of damage before the slash lost power. This would explain why it can kill hundreds of weak demons or one powerful one. The slash would continue until it reached the preselected distance or did all it's damage. |
| Vahenir09-23-04, 08:44 PM | Good thing that's exactly what Ere is Not sure if you're getting snippy with me here, but just to clarify: I didn't say it wasn't. I was just discussing how the concept of some of the more ridiculous weapons of anime (no offense) would or would not fit into different setting styles. Sorry if I went on a rant about it or offended anyone, it was not my intention. |
| Vaalingrade Ashland09-29-04, 12:23 AM | No offense taken at all. My world is designed to maximise anime style and physics. I was simply pointing that out. |
| Vahenir09-29-04, 01:16 AM | Well then you're in good shape for uber-weapons. Do you start characters at higher levels, because even in a maxed out campaign.. a 1st level character isn't all that impressive. Just curious, really. |
| Vaalingrade Ashland09-29-04, 03:48 PM | I generally start at 3,5,or 8 (when intending to go epic), but the world is designed to accomodate lower levels. Unlike other high level worlds, I've actually taken time to justify it. You can find it HERE (http://ere.ledgermaincomics.com/settlements.htm) |
| Alchahest10-02-04, 06:15 PM | jsut a note: Orbysii mentioned a cloak with the ability to function as a tower shield +5 +5 to what? tower shields don't affect AC, they provide cover. |
| masterofmayhem10-03-04, 03:07 PM | Uhh . . . tower shields give 4 AC. Tack on a +5 enhancement bonus to that and you have a +9 shield bonus. |
| Flay Crimsonwind10-10-04, 06:28 PM | I know it's not impressive, but does anyone have stats for a small, palmable smoke-screen bomb, such as is seen in "Flame of Recca"? On a different note, what about the Fujin, it's specifics, and can a fujin control something other than wind? |
