After a moment the creature is gifted with the power to morph. The character can touch any creature of the aberration, animal, dragon, giant, humanoid, magical beast or monstrous humanoid type and assume its shape. This action requires a full round of contact. If under stress, this ability requires a DC 25 Concentration check. The character then assumes the shape of the creature, as if using the shape change spell. The subject of this power experiences a moment of calm but is not otherwise affected. The subject's willingness does not matter, but the character must maintain contact for a full round. At any time, the character can resume his own shape as a standard action; however, if he fails to do so within 2 hours, he remains stuck in the borrowed shape permanently. He cannot assume incorporeal shapes with this power. I was thinking maybe a +1 to LA? |
| Kojin_Delacour10-15-06, 03:36 PM | I may have missed it somewhere but when they take the shape of something they have touched are they a clone of that beings looks? I think the +1 is ok seeing has how I would forget to change back and be stuck that way forever. But if you are permenantly changed to that being can you still morph? |
| Alcalientre10-15-06, 04:48 PM | You know what I don't get? If you get stuck in a form, why can't you just morph back into your original form and wait to get stuck in it again? Or do you lose the ability to morph when this happens to you? I don't remember, I read the books once like 7 years ago. Anyway, you should change the description so it doesn't sound as if you change when you touch the animal, since you can change at any time afterward. Other than that... assuming the caster level on shapechange is equal to your character level, so there is a limit on HD, you are still getting the pre-eratta druid's most powerful ability, so... definitely more than a +1 to your effective character level. I would get rid of the shapechange, instead using alternate form like the nerfed druid. Then it might be +1. |
| CryoSilver10-15-06, 04:51 PM | In order to morph into yourself, you'd have to touch yourself, and that isn't appropriate for young adult novels. |

The first problem I see with this is it allows a Monk focused on Grappling to become any creature he fights, essentially being able to slay any dragon by morphing into it and stacking his Monk abilities on top of being the dragon. Other similar combos can produce such hazardous effects. It isn't overpowered in a world where most of the player's enemies will have class levels. But you have to be worried when one of your players can morph into a beholder when it's convenient. I don't know enough about LA to give you a proper answer. Compare it with a lycanthrope. Isn't it kind of like that on steriods? Try statting it up as a template, and then posting it at the Races forum. It is a kind of template, isn't it? |
| RazielK10-15-06, 06:15 PM | A template given to him through technology. |
| supernerd891610-15-06, 06:55 PM | It's been so long since I read that series... and I think I missed 11 and 47... time flies |
| Mousse10-15-06, 07:15 PM | Wasn't it that you also lost the power if you got stuck in an alternate form? Its been ages and ages, but I recall that Tobias later regained his morphing power, which implies that, after getting stuck as a hawk, he had to have lost them in the first place. |
| RazielK10-15-06, 07:18 PM | He regained them by the Elliment (an omnipotent being equivalent to a God) letting him get his moprhing power back and going back in time so he could acquire himself and morph into his human form for 2 hours at a time. |
| Sanguine_My_Brother10-15-06, 09:32 PM | I think that some limits should be placed on the size of the creature that you turn into similiar to the druid's wildshape ability. That and maybe the creature could get a fortitude save or something in order to resist giving up its DNA. Also maybe it should be treated as a melee touch attack. |
| RazielK10-15-06, 09:35 PM | Maybe we could limit it just to normal animals like Bears, lions and snakes or somethin like that? |
| Artector10-15-06, 09:38 PM | My god that was a long time ago... Favorite is still The Ellimist, that was a cool book. Fort save would make sense. But this could lead to some serious abuse, the sorc grabs natural spell and turns into a hawk at every chance. |
| Tempest Stormwind10-15-06, 09:42 PM | I remember reading those books. I was already toward the upper end of their intended age bracket when they came out, so I stopped reading around 12 or so (and I never read the spinoff books)... but I'm told it remained pretty good, especially for a YA series. Indulge me for a minute here. In April, Complete Psionic came out. I remember reading it and thinking "Man, I could do better." About that time, three others with the same idea got together with me and we ended up writing a 175-page sourcebook for psionics called Untapped Potential. I mention this since one of the things in that book is a replacement shapeshifting system. One of the things in that system involves imprinting the forms of other creatures, thus formalizing "familiarity". Basically, you'd have to touch a creature for about a minute and concentrate, and it'd be a part of you - and several powers would use that creature's shape as a sort of focus, altering their effects accordingly. The mechanics behind that would make an excellent basis for Animorph tech morphing system. (They'd need customizing, but so would anything else.) They're also Open Game. It wasn't their intent to be that close to the books, but in hindsight, they match up pretty nicely in most regards. If you're interested, I can provide people with them. Or you can buy the book, but if you're not into psionics, it probably won't be worth your money. |
| RazielK10-15-06, 09:46 PM | I would like it if you do not mind, I adore psionics. |
| Tempest Stormwind10-15-06, 10:29 PM | The entire mechanics are pretty involved, but here's the executive summary. Some powers carry the [Formbound] descriptor. If you have a caster or manifester level of at least 3, you can touch a living or recently-dead creature and "imprint" its form in yourself. By default (this would need to be changed for the animorph version), you can hold one form, plus one per five character levels (a feat upgrades this), and no form's HD can exceed your own. (There's minor type/subtype restrictions -- Incorporeal, Swarm and Extraplanar creatures can't be imprinted, and neither can undead or construct). These imprints last until you choose to abandon them. All [Formbound] powers use these forms to determine their exact effects -- but you also have the option of making a temporary imprint by touching a creature as you manifest the power in question. Example: Assume Form is a self-explanatory power that grants you the shape (and some characteristics) of an imprinted form. At any time, I can assume the form of any of my imprinted forms, or the forms of any creatures I could touch by manifesting the power. Some powers also belong to the Shapechanging subschool, which denotes effects that alter your form. A lot of old powers got moved here -- it has no actual effect outside of specific powers, though. There are four major new powers that replace Metamorphosis -- Assume Form, Assume Ability, Fluidic Form, and Borrow Essence. Assume Form grants you basic combat buffs based on the form in question (i.e. instead of replacing your physical scores, those scores get an enhancement bonus equal to the form's relevant ability modifier), but is limited by the form's CR. Assume Ability is similar, but it borrows extraordinary special attacks and such. Fluidic Form lets you manifest Shapechanging powers faster and more efficiently, and Borrow Essence is restricted to the shapechanging PrC we made, granting you the form's supernatural abilities. It's important to note that if you're using Assume Form, Assume Ability, or Borrow Essence, you CAN use another of those powers, but it must use the same imprint. (That is, I can't be in the form of an elephant and assume Swallow Whole from a purple worm.) Finally, there's a PrC, the Anyform Savant, which uses these to best effect -- it gains even more options when manifesting shapechanging powers, including boosts to ML and extra augments to some good shapechanging powers. They're also the only nonepic way to use Borrow Essence. (The idea behind this system was that Polymorph/Metamorphosis was too good as a single power. For instance, Thicken Skin granted a natural armor bonus, but was almost worthless by the time you got Metamorphosis which could grant BETTER natural armor bonuses AND improved combat options in a single action. Yes, Thicken Skin could make it better, but it wasn't worth buffing twice. So, we split the powers up -- you want natural armor, you use Thicken Skin. If you want them all at once, have Fluidic Form active beforehand. And so on.) Assume Form, I should note, has a utility augment that seems too perfect for the animorphs, though. By spending 2 fewer power points, you can assume the form of any animal of 2HD or less, and effectively become that animal. That version of the ability would likely be the basis for animorph transformation. If you're interested in seeing all of this (along with other psionic material), follow the Untapped Potential link in my sig. If you're not, I hope that helps with some of the inspiration. |

(virtually any creature it encounters? ) neet. for only a +1 LA? my lvl 10 wizards casts hold monster (or something) on a adult red or though non-leathal damage captures it and touches it. BOOM. ECL form dragon alown (racial HD's + LA ): above ECL 20. with my 10 levels wizard = ECL+30. cool: Epic here i come i'dd at least change the level adjustment to the creature it changes into. |
| Darth Sephiroth10-16-06, 09:39 AM | Perhaps limit it to creatures with HD equal to his level. That ought to cover any problems with the LA |
| Qube10-16-06, 09:41 AM | Perhaps limit it to creatures with HD equal to his level. That ought to cover any problems with the LA this is not enough: 1 word: "CoDzilla": the wild shape of the druid is based on HDs |
| RazielK10-16-06, 09:49 AM | Well, from the series as I have read it, they have only be able to morph into actual animals and a few species from other planets. I was thinking of limiting their ability to morph to just animals and maybe Magical Beasts. This would help eliminate many of the more powerful options, and give the idea itself a better chance at balancing itself. On top of that, it makes the morphers have to choose their morphs. It seems better. I might sound a bit n00bish here, but...um...what is "CoDzilla"? |
| Darth Sephiroth10-16-06, 10:23 AM | Morphic also requires Will saves if I remember right, the animal instincts can take over such as Jake eating a spider in the 1st book |
| RazielK10-16-06, 03:05 PM | Good point, well here is a template I am thinking, it is a bit off the fly. No points or abilities are changed except a special quality detailed here: After recieving technology from another world, the individual obtains the power to turn their bodies into that of a Magical Beast or Animal equal to or lower their Hit Dice. To obtain the beings DNA, they must succeed on a touch attack. if under stress, this also requires a DC 20 concentration check. You may hold as many beings as you want however you can only pick beings with DNA/blood. When you acquire a being you are always able to turn into that form, being an exact clone of it. Morphing takes a full round action that provokes an attack of opportunity. after you morph you must make an initial Will save equal to the HD of the creature you morphed into to retain control of yourself, or else you take on the same instinct that the creature has. Also, if anything significant happens to the animal that would cause it to react in a specific way (I.e. a bee's nest being invaded) you must make another Will save per round you are in morph during that event. This Will save DC against this effect is the creatures HD+5. You may only stay in a morph for up to two hours or else you are stuck in the morph permanently. (Demorphing is also a Full round action that probokes an AoO). When you are stuck in a morph you retain all class abilities, unless you are physically unable to. Finally, when you are stuck in morph, you are unable to morph again without divine intervention. LA: +1 or +2 |
| demoniciron10-16-06, 04:15 PM | so wait, my wizard can morph in a tarrasque? or a great red wyrm??? (virtually any creature it encounters? ) neet. for only a +1 LA? You have to touch the creature while alive! a wizard would be incinerated and there is only one tarrasque so finding is a problem |
| supernerd891610-16-06, 04:16 PM | CoDzilla= Cleric or Druid-zilla You have to touch the creature while alive! a wizard would be incinerated and there is only one tarrasque so finding is a problem my lvl 10 wizards casts hold monster (or something) on a adult red or though non-leathal damage captures it and touches it. Unless of course it allows a will save or something. Still, it's alive |
| RazielK10-16-06, 08:31 PM | Please PEACH my template? Please? |
| theotherdraxen10-16-06, 08:44 PM | IMO, LA +2 just to be on the safe side. FYI: Lycanthropes have a LA of +3 (and 6 racial hit dice). While not the same, certainly, there are a number of similiarities. DC 20 concentration check? I don't recall anyone in the books being able to acquire DNA while under stress (but my memory isn't clear). If the task is difficult but do-able, then the DC should be 20. If the task is Olympic scale, the DC should be 30. If the task is nigh-impossible, then the DC should be 40. At least, that's what I gather from what I've read. |
| RazielK10-16-06, 10:19 PM | Alright, cool. Anyone else have anything? I would like to check a few sources. |
