Another two-weapon fighting question [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-04-04, 01:11 PM I have a lvl 2 ranger who just got the two-weapon fighting style ability. I am currently equipped with a battleaxe in my strong hand and a returning throwing axe in my off-hand. I feel like I should be able to throw the axe with the 1/2 strength bonus for off-hand weapons then swing the battleaxe with both hands to get the 1 1/2 strength bonus as opposed to just the 1 strength bonus (both at -2 to hit). I know it may be exploiting a hole in the rules, but does this sound acceptable?

12-04-04, 01:31 PM As long as you werent allowed to go to a one handed grip as a free action anymore I think it would be fine (guess what happens when that axe returns).

12-04-04, 01:42 PM I'd say no. You'd basically be making two attacks with your off-hand (even though the second attack would technically just be assisting the first). When you get Improved Two-weapon fighting, I could see that tactic working (throw off-hand, 1-H attack, then 2-H attack). But for now, its doing a little too much at once.

12-06-04, 12:38 PM I don't like the feel of this. Plus, don't returning weapons return to you just before you next action? So if you could do this, you would still have 2 hands on your other weapon and the returning axe would drop to the ground?

12-06-04, 04:00 PM I've asked a similiar question to Wizards (and the Sage, but got only one reply, and it wasn't Skip) and while not entirely accurrate, you have to respect Wizards as being official. And officially, you cannot repurpose your weapon from one handed to two handed after having already attacked with it one handed that round.

My specific question was this: "when using a double weapon, can I smack a chump with all my TWF goodies and then at the end of my turn repurpose to wield my double weapon with two hands (anticipating some more healthy smacking around with Attacks of Oppurtunity)?" While it's different than the scenario you're talking about, their answer of "Uh, No" sets a precidence that would deny your fun as well.
