taking a note from exalted deeds and the antimagic shackles, how effective would it be to make a 5ft antimagic feild around yourself, as a fighter. would any fighter really want this item. what if it could be turned off and on?

It would be incredibly powerful. The antimagic field means that spells could not touch you. Then you just have to build a fighter that is optimized to not rely on magical items/effects.

Reminds me of an 'Antimagic Barbarian' build I saw on CO a while back. Was brutally effective.

I have seen this written up before. If you are honest about it, it ends up being epic unless you put in some real limitations (such as 1/day)

I don't see it being epic unless I am missing some rule (don't create a lot of custom magic items). It seems like even a field usable 5 times a day would still be quite a bit less than a +10 weapon.

Any fighter shold love such an item; no one can use Supernatural abilities against you that means no Dragon Breath Weapons, no Incorporeal atacks, no Blinking Rogues, no Energy Drains, no gaze attacks, you ignore most DR (if you get in close), you can shoot magic arrows (when they leave the field they function once more) and when you need healing, just take off the collar. Good stuff all around.

It's an interesting thought, it might actually be worth a try :) Stick it on the dwarven tank. the blinking rogues would still be annoying. Because techinically they aren't in that 5 foot area and can still blink than stab than pull their arm back and blink.
