I remember to have been reading here a thread about the problems of creating a magical item that grants the power to use antimagic field at will, but I just can't find it.

Could you tell me if such an item could be created?Or could you post the link to that thread?I'm particularly interested in such an item, since my players are approaching the epic levels and find more and more difficult to face powerful spellcasters.

There is an item in one of the Forgotten Realms books called an Antimagic Torc that creates an antimagic field 1/day.

Note, if attempting to create such an item, you should use the 7th level spell Anti-Magic Aura, not the 6th level spell Anti-Magic Field, to determine the price. You can still use Anti-Magic Field as the pre-req, but price it as a 7th level spell.

Why? Because the only real difference between the two spells is that anti-Magic Aura can be cast on other people, while Anti-Magic Field must be centered on the caster.

Unless you want the magic item to only work for high level spellcasters, it should be priced on the spell that can be cast on people besides high level spellcasters.

List of items I know of that do anti-Magic:

Magebane Manacles (Arms and Equiptment Guide, 3.0)
Anti-Magic Shackles (Book of Exalted Deeds, 3.5)
Anti-Magic Torc (Underdark, 3.5)

The Shackles look a lot like the 3.5 version of the Manacles. They are continuous.

The Torc is a 1/day item, not an at will item.

I was talking about the Anti-Magic Torc that Tarkin referred to in his post.

So, IF it were standard item creation it would look like this
(SL6*CL11*2000)/(5/1c)
Where SL=spell level, CL=caster level, and 2k is the base cost for a magic item. the divided by 5/1c is five over the number of charges the thing has on a daily basis. with the above equation, we get 26,400 for a once per day AM field that persists for 110 minutes. (Keep in mind that this is at minimum spell level and that any change in SL ups the minimum CL)

To note the AM torc in underdark costs 25k and has a similar CL of 11th. 1,400gp separate the two.

If you wanted it to be at will, it would cost (SL6*CL11*2000), or 132,000, which at epics is a mere pittance.

Hope it helps.

The item you're talking about is probably just a variant on the Antimagic Shackles from BoED 116. Just attach it to a cloak instead; there's no point in cuffing yourself every time you need to kill some spellcasters.

As I said earlier, it is innappropriate to cost it out using the 6th level spell.

To make it fair, you need to price it out as a 7th level spell (although you can use the 6th level spell as the pre-req)

And you need the duration modifier. Net result is about twice the lowball price you listed.

Doing it that way, it looks like this:

7*13*2000* 1.5(because the duration is 10 min/level)

Fair value for an always on anti-magic field magic item useable by anyone: 273,000 gp

i know this is a dumb question but
what is a torc?

I think that the word torc refers to a sort of necklace used by the ancient celtic and northern populations.
