I was trying to figure out what would be best for my character. He is basically going to be a melee fighter. I was thinking about getting a greatsword or maybe a couple battle axes instead. Im not sure which would be best because I dont have the stats on eather. Also, if anyone has any suggestions i would apprieciate it. Im a NE character of M. size. thanks for the help.

First of all, the core books are published on line in several places via the SRD.

One Handed weapon
Battleaxe 10 gp 1d6 1d8 ×3 — 6 lb. Slashing

Two Handed Weapons:
Greataxe 20 gp 1d10 1d12 ×3 — 12 lb. Slashing
Greatsword 50 gp 1d10 2d6 19-20/×2 — 8 lb. Slashing

1d8 averages 4.5
1d12 averages 6.5
2d6 averages 7 points.

If you want "a couple of battleaxes", then you probably want the following feats:

Two Weapon Fighting
Oversized Two Weapon Fighting
Improved Two Weapon Fighting (after 6th level)
Greater Two Weapon Fighting (after 11th level)

For shear damage useable at all times, the GreatSword is the best choice. Add in Power Attack for when you face creatures with a low AC.

If you have sneak attack/ranger favored enemey, lots of cashs for poison/magic weapons, then TWF starts becoming a good idea in certain cases.

Lastly, when thinking about what to take at lower levels I strongly suggest people consider what their character will want to take at higher levels, specifically any Prestige Classes it might desire.

Ok a melee fighter go great sword but don't be a goof and ignor the need for a ranged attack.
With these weapons you get your STR to add in to damage and you can use them without droping your great sword.
Throwing axes do good damage nice range and they can go on your belt.
Javilins do the same damage with better range you need a quiver to carry more.

Bolas Do subdual damage unless you get them spiked the best thing is you can drop foes in their tracks leting you limit who gets close and how fast.
While they are prone you get a +4 to Melee attack them so you can dump those 4 points in to Power Attack and with your two handed weapon make that 6 points of damage.

My char suports the fighters when I am low on spells with bolas and it is just murder when foes go down.
