| YabaTheWhat02-28-06, 03:27 PM | I'm looking for an item which, when worn, will transmute into any form of clothing the wearer desires. While this includes armor, it does not actually provide an AC bonus, or any other protective benefits. An enhanced version could also have a Magic Aura (i.e. Nystul's Magic Aura) effect. Does such an item already exist? If not, what spells would be used to craft it, and how much would it cost? Would it provide a bonus to disguise, the ability to change disguises faster, or both? I was thinking of using the Alter Self spell as a prerequisite, since Disguise Self is illusory, Mending doesn't really do enough, and Polymorph Any Object seems like serious overkill. |

| NthDegree25602-28-06, 05:27 PM | Hat of Disguise is just like the Disguise Self spell, though, which he already said is inadequate. Alter Self sounds like a good spell to base it on, although you should definitely take into consideration the actual utility of the item rather than the spell used in its construction. Are there potential abuses? How much better than a Hat of Disguise is it? How much worse? (can't change facial appearance, etc.) Those should be your guidelines, far more so than the spell it's based on. |
| YabaTheWhat02-28-06, 08:37 PM | How about a +5 bonus to disguise, and reduce the time to don a disguise by half (or one-round transition just to change clothes)? Add in the Magic Aura effect, for a total of 4000 GP: 2500 for skill bonus, 1000 for magic aura (long duration cuts the continuous use cost in half), 500 for the quick change. Obviously the bonus granted by this isn't as high as that granted by the Hat of Disguise. However, the bonus would stack with the Hat of Disguise, or with the Disguise Self spell, since the bonuses are unnamed. As an interesting point, the Alter Self spell doesn't actually alter the appearance of equipment when cast on a person. Either the equipment melds or remains. And the Disguise Self spell only covers up equipment, so anyone touching the person gets a Will save. |

You can use it on all your magical equipment, and it's amazingly cheaper (just 750gp) than building magic aura into every suspicious item. Tack on another 100gp or so to make it look like an innocuous pen, and there you go. The only problem is that it will lose charges. For my character, I've thought of a wonderous item version of the magic aura wand, a silk handkerchief that can change magic items' auras when rubbed on them, and can also clean things, make them smell nice, etc. Magic aura and prestidigitation, just 3,000gp. Handy for those times when you really need to look like a grimy bum, and smell like one, too. |

Simply, Sirnightwraith. |

The handkerchief isn't a bad idea though. Unfortunately, I don't have Races of Eberron, so I can't take a look at the Vestment of Many Styles. |
