I was just wondering if anyone bothered to shell out for Vorpal weapons anymore, given their cost and general lack of effect.

95% of the time they don't do anything, and 5% of the time they kill the Great Wyrm in the Surprise Round. Doesn't really seem like that good of a tradeoff to me.

Vorpal isn't really worth the cost anymore, so I personally don't like it.

Vorpal continues to be a powerfull function.
Unfortunately, the rareness makes it less fun to play.

Who should use a Vorpal Weapon?

Characters with extra attacks.

Specifically:

Whirlwind fighters LOVE a Vorpal Weapon - attack 7 people a round and every 3 rounds you should get a Vorpal kill.

TWF rangers

Monks - especially a Monk fighter that also uses TWF.

Add to Tarkin's list:

Anyone with a Spiked Chain.

It is just WAY too much fun to imagine you knocking someone's head off at 10' with a chain. Very Wuxia.

Vorpal needs to be a slashing weapon...spiked chain is piercing... :)

I guess it's time for some reading comprehension and tactical visualization practice.

Yeah, I know. Despite EVERY picture of the Spiked Chain ever drawn having slashing blades on the ends, it's a piercing weapon.

Fine. Vorpal Kusari-Gama.

when I was asked to make an 20th level character for a one-shot adventure I gave him a vorpal weapon, it worked out pretty well (he actually vorpalized two creatures as part of a whirl-wind attack).

3.5 MM vampires, that's about right for the spiked chain, if anything it should be piercing/bludgeoning

I have always had an enormous dislike for Vorpal - 3.5 didn't change that in any way. It doesn't exist in my games. Period. No arguments.

Vorpal is powerful but not worth the price. Its benefits are too rare to be worth the price you pay (including the opportunity cost of other special abilities), yet it's too powerful to let it cost a smaller amount. It can instatly kill almost every monster or NPC 5% of the time. That's an obscenely powerful ability. But you have to roll a 20. I'm not paying for something I only use 5% of the time.

There is a picture in Complete Warrior that I thought was a pretty decent rendition of a Spiked Chain as well... it was definitely bludgeoning, and definitely finesse-worthy.

I've alwyas wanted to break the "piercing only" and have a bad guy with vorpal shuriken. I was inspired by this movie script:
