Hi everyone,

I'm looking to see if anyone knows of a components based crafting system, meaning that instead of gold piece costs and long waits, players would instead adventure for components that must be used to create the magic item. Like needing hell hound blood to make a flaming sword.

Has anyone made something like this or know of any such system that someone else has made? If so, please link

Thanks!

Your idea is an awfully cool one.
Here are my two cents:

Go to d20srd.org, and check out these two areas:

Variant Rules (Building Characters) -> Craft Points
Variant Rules (Magic) -> Metamagic Components

See where this is going? At best, what you've got here is a list of components and prices that are somehow tied to certain spells. Maybe something as simple as substituting that component for the wait or spell or something could do the trick. I don't know.

Let's see: it lists "Heartwood of Venerable Oak", 340gp, as being related to Extend Spell. Word up; perhaps you need to shove a piece of this stuff into an amulet and then spend some craft points or something and then call it done.

Just ideas, man. Let me know how you develop it.

There is something called Power Components.

They consist of body parts from creatures.

That does some of what you want.

Power Components reduce the XP cost for spells and for magic item creation reduces the XP cost and the gold cost.

It does not reduce the time to make the item however.

Several Dragon magazines discussed them.

Issue 332, page 48 contained an article I wrote, listing power components you could make from a Dead Dragon.
