We just ended our last session on a massvie cliffhanger. The fighter has gone after a criminal the party believes has been wrongly accused, and deserves to be set free, and he wants him dead or alive (probably dead, since he can't possibly get him back alive with us here). We've caught the guy, and the battle is about to happen. The fighter has started wading across to the criminal who is willing to fight to get home to see his family on the other side of the country.

This is where the party is about to stop him. We don't want to kill either of them, and the fighter isn't wanting to kill us. None f us are monks, so our question is this:

An unarmed strike provokes an AoA when used. If the fighter took a punch from one of us, would his retaliatory punch provoke an attack of opportunity from the one he attacks?

By example, let's say my ranger walks up and goes to punch the fighter. In retaliation, he punches me for his AoA. Would this in turn let me get in another punch?

Without Improved Unarmed Strike, the fighter doesn't threaten with his unarmed striked. He couldn't take the AoO in the first place.

This is good, since we can't really do lethal damage to each other and call ourselves "good".

This is 100% correct.

However, it is possible for an AoO to provoke an AoO itself.

For instance, say you have two combatants armed with short swords. One comes to the other and tries to trip his opponent. His opponent gets an AoO. If he uses the AoO to disarm the attacker, he provokes, and the first attacker gets an AoO.

If no one has Combat Reflexes, it stops there. If they both do, you could have a little string of AoOs going on until someone drops, is disarmed, or runs out of AoOs.

And this is why I house rule that you may not generate AoO with an AoO :P .

Attack of Appertunity? It starts with an O there, buddy.

Why? What's wrong with AoOs generating AoOs?

With the Epic version of Combat Reflexes, it could be an infinite loop.

THAT would be interesting to see. :D A bit like the fights between Neo and Smith in The Matrix, where the blows were supposed to occur to fast for the eyes to follow. (All of the attacks and counterattacks would still take place within 6 seconds...)

But hey, it's Epic so if everyone is cool with it...

Actually, there'd be nothing to see until someone actually does something that doesn't provoke. It'd be nothing but the two people winding up to counterattack as they try to take advantage of the openings being created.

Right, there would be a bit of Zeno's paradox about that...

But if was resolved - if one of the parties stopped the chain at an arbitrary number of attacks - the blows would then all occur within the six seconds of the round.

And indeed, that would be nuts.

We had a slight headache of one where two fighters with combat reflex started attacking each other with rolibars gambit. Each round between those two took so long to resolve we made that house rule (especially since they started using trip and disarm attempts and such...without apporiate feats).

The fact that Robilar's says it takes place after the initiating movement makes that a lot less wierd/deadly/strange.

If I WERE to house rule, then I would rule that Robilar's and similar feats can not do activate on an AoO themselves.

I would not limit AoO's, just the abuses.
