Hey all,

Once again, sorry if these are being asked for the millionth time, but I am pretty new to D&D, so here we go:

Question #1:

In 3.0 you would get an AoO when anyone entered or left a threatened square.

In 3.5 it just seems to give AoO when leaving a threatened square.

How do you all play this? (we have been doing 3.0) and the battles are fast and bloody, kinda cool.

Question #2:

Basically does a Keen Weapon and Improved Critical stack? I kinda think so, but man that is sick!

Thanks all!

Going out...

They don't on 3.5.

1.

Even in 3.0, you did NOT really get an AoO for entering a square. AoO's pretty much work the same way from 3.0 to 3.5

However, they just worded it far more complexly in 3.0. In 3.5, they simplified it a lot more and outright said "AoO just for leaving a square".

2. In 3.0, they stacked. In 3.5, Keen and Improved Critical do not stack.

#1 - My group plays by all 3.5 rules. An AoO for entering AND leaving a threatened square seem like extra punishment, and I'm glad it was eliminated in 3.5.

#2 - They don't stack. They did in 3.0. But, in D&D stacking terms... Double + Double = Triple. So, a greatsword with a crit range of 19-20, would crit on 15-20 with Keen and IC.

Okay thanks for the responses.

But doesn't Combat Reflexes get a bit nerffed then if you don't get AoO for entering a square?

Just wondering.

Ya, I now remeber the the double + double = Triple, thanks!

Yeah, if that were the case, everyone would just stand their ground unless they had a longer weapon! :P

#2 - They do stack (as explained in the Keen description in MIC or DMG). But, in D&D stacking terms... Double + Double = Triple. So, a greatsword with a crit range of 19-20, would crit on 15-20 with Keen and IC.
No, they do not stack in any fashion in 3.5. You're right about the double-a-double-is-a-tripple rule, but it does not apply with IC and keen in 3.5.

Per the SRD on Keen (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/magicWeapons.htm#keen) (emphasis mine):
This ability doubles the threat range of a weapon. Only piercing or slashing weapons can be keen. (If you roll this property randomly for an inappropriate weapon, reroll.) This benefit doesn’t stack with any other effect that expands the threat range of a weapon (such as the keen edge spell or the Improved Critical feat).

Moderate transmutation; CL 10th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, keen edge; Price +1 bonus.

Per the SRD on Improved Critical (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#improvedCritical) (emphaisis mine):
Improved Critical [General]
Choose one type of weapon.

Prerequisite
Proficient with weapon, base attack bonus +8.

Benefit
When using the weapon you selected, your threat range is doubled.

Special
You can gain Improved Critical multiple times. The effects do not stack. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of weapon.

This effect doesn’t stack with any other effect that expands the threat range of a weapon.

A fighter may select Improved Critical as one of his fighter bonus feats.

If you're a level 4 fighter:
1 Combat Reflexes
1 Hold the Line
2 Combat Expertise
3 Improved Trip
4 Improved Disarm

Nothing can move close to you wihtout provoking an AoO. If something DARES to charge and you have a reach weapon, you get 2 AoOs: One for charging and one for leaving your reach threatend square. You can trip him, disarm him and hit him, and ALSO deal double damage on one attack if you where ready. That's about as humilliating as you can get by that level, three attacks and you leave him on the floor, defensless, crying like a baby.

Even in 3.0, you did NOT really get an AoO for entering a square. AoO's pretty much work the same way from 3.0 to 3.5Correct. From the 3.0 rules (http://www.opengamingfoundation.org/srd/SRDCombatBasics.rtf):
"If a character moves through (not simply into) or out of a threatened area, a character usually provokes an attack of opportunity. "

As for Combat Reflexes, it is pretty much the SINGLE most powerfull feat that has no pre-reqs.

It is usefull in so many builds, that claiming it is nerfed is silly.

I strongly suspect that you were playing Combat Reflexes in a radically over-powered manner during your 3.0 game.

Given that, in 3.0, you could only take one AoO per enemy per round, Combat Reflexes had its power increased in 3.5; now you can take multiple attacks against a single foe in the same round, provided that the foe performs multiple provoking actions. (Movement through multiple threatened squares is one provoking action.)

1. I believe 3.0 you gained an AoO when an opponent moved "within" a threated square NOT when they moved into it. Version 3.5 just made what that movement was a lot clearer.

2. In 3.0 Keen and Improved Critical stacked but that is no longer the case. I almost prefered when they did stack because even with a huge threat range you still needed to actually hit and make a confirmation roll.
