| Valthran10-04-04, 12:59 PM | My characters initiative count places his actions midway through a round compared to his opponents and allies. In all examples he will be armed with a melee weapon before his turn starts and when it ends. In the following examples when (BESIDES his turn) do you think he may make AoO?? before his turn, before and after his turn, only after his turn??? 1) Character moves from position A to position B using 2 move actions 2) Character starts on a platform in position A then uses 2 move actions to climb to the floor in position B 3) At start of turn character drops his weapon carries out a rounds worth activities (anything but casting a spell) then at the end of his turn uses quick draw to end his turn holding a weapon AoO's only before, before and after, only after his turn???? and the survey says......... |
| FitzNighteyes10-04-04, 01:05 PM | You mean before his first turn in combat? After that, he is eligible for an AoO anytime he threatens, and is not taking an action that prohibits AoOs. Before that, he is ineligble unless he has Combat Reflexes. If you mean before his turn in each round, you have misunderstood how D&D 3e circular initiative works. (Just checking, you probably know how it works). Given this, and assuming combat has been ongoing for a few rounds, most answers will be both (some actions can change this). 1) Both. 2) Both. 3) Both. |
| DemonMonkeyBoy10-04-04, 02:40 PM | :b: As written there not enough info to be sure you get an AoO or not. You can take an AoO any time durning the round, before or after your turn. Depending on your feats you'll most likly only get to take one around. Combat Reflexs allows you to take more than one a round. Moving from a to b. If B is entering, but not leaving, one of your threatened squares. Than no AoO. Climing is part of a move action and I have not found a specific reason that climing alone would cause an AoO, but I could see it being allowed. For question three it really depends on what he is doing. On pg 141 in the PHB there is a short list thing that do and don't cause AoO. Compare what is being done and deside if a AoO is reasonable. If the above doesn't help try Wizards main page and look for Rules of the Game. |
| FitzNighteyes10-04-04, 03:34 PM | He's not asking if they cause AoOs. He's asking if a character doing these things can make AoOs. |
| tarkin10-04-04, 04:16 PM | According to the rules, he can make AoO's during all of that time, EXCEPT when he does not threaten. In all cases, before and after his action he threatens, so he can take AoOs. He does not threaten while he does not have a weapon in his hand. So he can not take an AoO during the time after he dropped his weapons but before he quickdraws new ones. You need both hands to climb, so I would not allow you to take an AoO while enganged in climbing. As he can cling with a weapon in hand, if you end your turn climbing, you can stop and get a weapon out. However, both of these cases are rare situation, requireing your opponent to have readied an action to attack you in the middle of your turn. |
| Valthran10-04-04, 07:05 PM | Thanks for the replies so far, this is more consensus than I was expecting. On another thread people appeared to feel that your actions (besides spell casting) during your turn could affect your ability to threaten outside your turn during a round. So I thought I would make it a thread central question instead of a sidebar discussion. So far all votes are in situations 1, 2 and 3 you will threaten and be able to make AoO before and after your turn. |
