AOO for moving through threat squares [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-08-06, 02:57 AM Here is how it works. My friend tells me that a normal medium character takes up one 5foot square.

He threatens all the 5 foot squares around him (( unless reach of whatever )). Now, when you are in the threat range, you can attack and do other things. My ally says that if you move within the threat range to another sqaure in the threat range you provoke an AOO. NOT just for moving out of a threat range. and . . . sadly, as the RAW seems to show, he may be right. Page 137 of the PHB says, "Moving out of a threatened square usually provokes an AOO . . . "

This to him means, even if moving to another square within the same threat range means an AOO because you have left one of the other squares. You haven't left the threat range, but you did leave one of the squares. So . . . who is right, I thought it was just for AOO for leaving threat RANGE not square. So please clear this up.

04-08-06, 03:03 AM Aye, yer friend is right because is says "moving out of a threatened square", not threatened area.

So dancing around inside someone's threat range will usually provoke, but not when you take a five foot step, remember.

04-08-06, 05:00 PM Also keep in mind movement only provokes an AoO once even if you move out of every square he threatens. For example if you move through every square surrounding him back to the square you started from he only gets 1 AoO for movement even if he has Combat Reflexes.

So your opponent could let you move a few squares then take advantage of the AoO later during your move. Generaly though opponents arn't mind readers so they take advantage of the AoO at first opportunity, even if it would be to their advantage to wait (flanking ect...).
