AoO on a charge? [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-01-05, 02:33 AM I thought this was clear-cut from the Player's Handbook saying a charge doesn't provoke an AoO, but I guess not since it came up recently. If you charge a guy with a 10 or 15 or or more reach, does he get to smack you before you make it to within 5' of him?

09-01-05, 08:08 AM You have forgotten to read note 1 on table 8-2. Don't feel bad; it's a common mistake. "Regardless of the action, if you move out of a threatened square you usually provoke an attack of opportunity. This column indicates whether the action itself, not moving, provokes an attack of opportunity."

Taking this into account, it's quite clear. Charging does not in and of itself provoke an AoO. However, leaving a threatened square while charging does.

09-06-05, 04:10 PM We had played with a house rule stating that the creature you are charging does not get an attack, but any creature who's zone you are moving though does.

It kind of goes against the Rules and may be broken. This will generally benefit the PC's more than the creatures since rarely do PC have reach.

My thoughts, though they may change without warning...

If you have a reach weapon yourself, then charging a person with a reach weapon won't provoke an AoO sinceyou never have to leave a threatened square.

(such as a longspear) set to receive a charge, does the
creature receiving the charge get an attack of opportunity?
Does the character with the spear get to attack for being set
to receive a charge and get an attack of opportunity before
the charging character gets to make his attack? What about
a creature with reach who has prepared to receive a
charge?

Preparing an action doesn’t affect who you threaten or
impair your ability to make attacks of opportunity.
If a character with a reach weapon (or creature with natural reach)
prepares an attack, the creature makes the prepared attack when
the first foe comes within reach. If the foe survives the
prepared attack and leaves the 5-foot square where the prepared
attack was delivered, it draws an attack of opportunity from the
creature because it’s leaving a threatened space.
