10-01-07, 09:56 PM Attacks of Opportunity: Attacking unarmed provokes an attack of opportunity from the character you attack, provided she is armed. The attack of opportunity comes before your attack. An unarmed attack does not provoke attacks of opportunity from other foes nor does it provoke an attack of opportunity from an unarmed foe.

Confused about this, so any time a monk attacks an armed opponent the armed opponent attacks first??? And only the opponent gets the AoO??? Say there's 2 orcs next the the monk. Don't the other orcs get an AoO??

Monks automatically have the Improved Unarmed Strike feat, which means they are considered armed (and do not provoke AoOs from people they attack barehanded). Assuming a character who does not have that feat, they would only provoke the attack from the orc they swing at, exactly as the paragraph you quote above says.

Any time a caster casts a spell they automatically get AoO? So isn't it almost impossible for them to ever cast a spell in close combat since they're automatically going to get slapped by every enemy around them??

They can avoid drawing an AoO by casting "on the defensive"; it requires making a DC 15 Concentration check.

Thet can also avoid an AoO by stepping back five feet before casting the spell, so as to no longer be in range.

Of course. I was, uh... simplifying, assuming that the original poster's character in question was a level 1 bard, because bards are awesome. Note how I also said a five-foot step would take him to safety, even though that is a drastic simplification.
